Hello everyone,
I'm new to the forum but have read a few on this topic but I'm really looking to get some solid straight forward answers. I'm in the process of purchasing 1986 300zx non turbo. Really excited about it especially being able to get my hands dirty in making it run once again. But there lyes the problem, it doesn't run. My two options are to rent a full length trailer or to rent a tow dolly. Now I read a bunch of people talking about the tow dolly, that you must load the rear wheel so not to mess up the transmission if it were to fall into gear during the trip. But would the front bumper ride the ground if this is done?? Secondly should I leave the key in to have the steering unlocked or is straighting the wheels locking them the better option. I can see validity on both sides (unlocked the wheel can freely flow with the route you're taking) (locked it would act just like a front wheel car on tow dolly and the actually dolly at the hitch would provide the stability needed).
Any and all information will be gratefully accept. Also to throw this into the mix, does pushing the car onto the dolly sound plausible? Thank you! I have pictures of the car if that help any talking about bumper clearance.

I've towed a Z31 on a dolly both ways. If it's a manual just put the front wheels up and carry on. it's really not a big deal, I tried doing it backwards once and the steering wheel lock looked straight but towed a little off kilter, tended to wander a bit, far more stable towing with the car pointed forward and at stock height the only issue I had was the dolly ramps would bottom out of the bottom of the car over large bumps. the only argument against a full trailer is it's harder to load a non running car, If you have enough truck to handle the full trailer it's the worry free way to tow.
