Howard Stern mentioned on the air a few years ago how tough it was to live on $250k in Manhattan and took angry calls from listeners all over the US.

To those outside the northeast you have no idea of the cost of living here.

When we lived in New York, we lived well north of the city (Orange County). But I can't believe the cost of living in the DC Metro area. While I don't think it's anywhere near living in NYC, it's still outrageous.

Good gosh, your maintenance fees are the same as your mortgage?

I don't feel in the least bit sorry for these people, lol.

Screw them. They can live on Long Island or in Connecticut then. Manhattan is obnoxious anyway.

And yes, DC is nuts. We don't have any co-op fees that are equal to anyone's mortgages, largely because there aren't really any co-ops in DC, but stuff is still expensive.

I paid about $192 per foot for my townhouse, not sure how that compares to people in other areas.

I know I saw a NYC penthouse in a real estate magazine that was going for about $8500psf, LOL. F**K that.

The problem in D.C. is that everyone makes money - average income is like $90k. If you rent rather than buy, though, the cost of living isn't that bad.

Hash, you do not live in D.C., you live in the freaking boonies. I know because I did that commute for 2 years. D.C. proper is more like $350-$400/sq. ft. in the decent neighborhoods.

There are places outside the Northeast that have a pretty high average cost of living. CA has several examples.

I have no sympathy for the execs forced to live on 500k/yr. They can leave if they don't like it; I'm sure someone else will fill the position, and probably do a better job than they did.

Agreed ALL DAY LONG.

My new house worked out to around $59 per square foot, in the 5th-largest city in the US, with one of the best job markets.

I live in the north east. It's cheap where I live.

Thankfully there's an online tool available so all of us hayseeds not living in the northeast can pretend that we understand.

Be thankful you're not in Moscow, Tokyo or London currently the top three in the world. NYC doesn't even crack the top 20.
