Hi. My wife's 09 G37 convertible (14000 miles) rear bumper was scratched pretty badly by another vehicle so I attempted a repair (a la Youtube) using some 2000 sandpaper and the stock touchup paint pens which came with the car. I didn't expect any miracles, but figured I could make it presentable and have it painted at a shop later. Anyway, the pearl white base coat went on OK, and almost looked like the factory color. However, when I applied a small test of the clear coat pen it immediately turned the area a yellowish color. I didn't want to make things worse so I tried to remove the small clear cut area while is was wet. Well, it almost all came off, and I even sanded with the 2000, but it's still yellow, Like it stained thru or something. Any reason this happened. Guess I need to get the whole bumper painted sooner than later. Any help appreciated.

Those kits are notoriously useless... but, you're not totally out of luck.

Go ahead and go back over it with a couple coats of the base coat. It won't hurt anything to skip the clear, and from a few feet away, it will disguise the area until you decide to respray the whole bumper.

On a side note, if you hang around the dealership, sometimes there will be a guy doing paintless dent repairs and chip fixes on the trade-in cars. Strike up a chat with him and casually ask if he'd do a "side job" for cash. Those guys can usually airbrush and blend a repair in a bumper for WAY less than a repaint.

Good luck, and welcome to NICOclub!

Thanks. That's a great idea. The clear looked somewhat yellow on the brush. I've never used it before, I figured it would dry clear and paint would stay white since the kit was NISSAN and same factory color code. Wrong.

I'm guessing the clear is old. Paint has a short shelf life, especially clear coat.

I ran into the same issue with a new paint pen when I purchased my Ivory Pearl G37. The white goes on fine but the clear coat actually has a brownish tint with the pearl in it and it does show a brownish color. At this point for touch ups I'll take dab some white and mix it with a bit of the "clear" to get a match.
