Ok, so, full disclosure, my 92 coupe has 250k on the original engine. I've driven the car the last 3 weeks or so, just recently bought it back from the guy I sold it to, blah blah, etc. Did a complete tune-up, oil change, air, plugs, everything. Been driving it easy, til the other day, when my wife was following me home on the I-state. She was in my GTP, decided to play. I know the KA does not like to rev, so I short-shifted at around 6500, every time except once. One too many I suppose. Get home, Damn thing sounded like a diesel. I know it has a lot of miles, but its not like I was shooting for 8k... Normal? abnormal? bad luck?

(sigh) Lucky me, picked up another running 92 coupe from an impound lot for $300. "Only" 150K! Guess I'll be doing an engine transplant this weekend. At least I'll have this one to play with while the original gets forged

150k should be fine as long as the car wasn't abused.Good luck with it!

It must have just been it's time to go. How high did it rev? I spin my 135K mile stock KA to 7200 on a daily basis.

UPDATE:

So finally got it unburied from the recent blizzard, looks like what I thought was a rod knocking was the timing chain slapping the guides. All the material was worn off the guide plates and the timing chain was hitting the guide between the cams. Luckily, timing sets aren't horribly expensive, so that's my project for next week. The head has been milled .010, so I'm hoping the new tensioner will take up the resulting slack in the new chains. Hopin she'll be back on the road next week

Hahaha, good thing it wasn't a thrown rod.
