Anyone know anythign about the laws for buying back a car once it has been declared totaled? I was just informed that it is illegal to sell a totaled car in Illinois, looking for some info regarding this. I would sell it as a parts car only, not to be driven. Thanks

You have the right to pull off whatever you want from the car body from the junkyard.

but you only get that one time. Sometimes they will ***** at you when you try to do this, but it is your right.

Yes. Clipped my driver side fender on a cliff up in the mountains, bent the strut tower a little and popped the airbag, so repair costs would be crazy. Now I just want to get what I can out of it, blue book values don't really reflect the market for S14s right now at all.

I don't know if its illegal. It just has a salvaged title now. It maybe be hard to register a salvaged car though.

The guy who wants to buy it isnt planning to register it. He just has a bunch of halfcuts and stuff lying around, likes to buy/sell parts I guess. He wants it to part out, somethign I can't really do since I park in a parking garage at my school and have no room at home for an extra car.

I'm sure it wouldn't be a problem. Just make a bill of sale saying you are selling it for parts purposes only and have him sign it. When he goes to scrap what remains of the car he would need a title to scrap it.

Do you know if this is true in all states? I have a car that will eventually need to scrap, but I want the wheels/tires, hatch, and many misc parts off it, I am afraid no junkyard around here will take it because like half the usable parts would be gone. (sorry to hijack)

I know in MD it's possible to buy it back.

You just pay the "salvage value", which basically means that you get your busted a$$ car, and then:

Total value - salvage value in cash.

Depending on what you drive, could be a good idea.

I'll do this if my 17K Rb25 S13 gets the shaft. Then I can part it out and start over, with a LOT of cash.

In ohio you can buy them back but they have a salvage title. Usually really cheap to buy them back....like 500-800 bucks.

You can buy it back even after you get the insurance claim. But, i think here in illinois it all depends on what year the car is. It has to be older than a certain year to qualify for a buyback. Check with your insurance company. We did it with a 90.
