I never use torque specs.

I'm contemplating whether i should use them when I reinstall the subframe, because that's a pretty serious piece if anything goes wrong.. but I'll probably end up torquing it as much as i can using a breaker bar..

The point is, torque specs are overrated IMO.

Torque specs are very important! If you overdo it you can actually stretch the bolt and it may break in use. Call the service department at Nissan for the spec. They should be able to look it up for you. :thinker

Yeah, caliper bolts are definitely ones you do NOT want to guess at. The engineers did not guess. They looked at all load cases, determined how much preload and strength is required, and they choose the fastener accordingly. Torque specs guarantee you have enough preload to meet the design criteria without being in danger of yielding the material.

^^ word. It's like saying torque specs don't count when you're tightening down your head.

I just got a call last week from a BMW guy looking for a new wheel. He had the brakes done about a month ago and one of the caliper bolts broke when he hit the brakes on the highway. The caliper spun up on the remaining bolt and hit the inside of the wheel's rim section knocking a quarter sized hole in the alloy! He was doing about 60 mph and was able to get it to the shoulder of the road without hitting anyone. He lost the wheel, the tire, and his brakes when the caliper left the rotor and the piston pushed out. His pedal went to the floor. Lucky for him it was on the front and he still had the hand brakes to slow the car down.
