What is the "factory" spec for the torque lockup to engage. Mine does around 40mph but this is kind of annoying because I travel alot around that speed.

I know based on other posts that the throttle position sensor can be adjusted to change this but it will affect the shifting of the transmission

I guess I just want to know what is the correct speed and go from there

Thanks for any help

I'd think what you're describing is normal. Infinti wanted the TC locked as much as possible to increase fuel economy. I use 3 a lot around town to prevent the constant hunting in a 40 or 45 MPH zone...

Someone with a J30 service manual should be along shortly with the exact spec.

You can misadjust the TPS as other things will be wrong!!!!!!!!4th gear lockup is a direct function of TPS opening: 35 mph up to 2/8 throttle opening....rapidly progressing to 65 mph at just 3/8-5/8 throttle opening.

So if my lockup is at 40mph then should I try to adjust or at least check the reading of the tps?

It has always done it at thsi speed and due to its age joe at scottsdale cannot tell me if this has ever been changed

I will lokk at it this weekend and post my readings to see where I need to go from there.

I do understand that playing with it can do other things that is why I have not touched it yet.

NO NO NO NO The tps is set so that at idle HOT the closed reading is 0.40-0.44 VDC.........the tcu translates the value dividing the 0.4---------4.0-4.4 VDC into 1/8 segments.

The TPS voltage needs to be correct for the ecu then everything is fine for tcu.

What happens is the engine power changes due to poor mainteance [dirty] so that at 35-40 mph the engine doesn't produce EXACTLY new power [down by 5-10%] so the throttle is depressed a little more and the system acts stange because the PERFECT POINT has changed.

Fix the engine so the power is as new that is the solution!!!!!!!!

I can't go get my service manual right now becuase it's in the garage and it's just too damn cold outside. However, your TPS should not be touched at all. Didn't you read my posts where I said I wished that I had never touched the damn thing? Your transmission sounds like it's operating normally. Just drop your J down into 3rd gear at those 35-45 mph speeds and leave it there. There will be less shifts and the engine will operate in a more comfortable power band.
