Well I was driving around the other day and blamo. I got a weird noise coming from the engine. At first I thinkg my alternator finally went out but no thats not it.

It sounds like 2 metal discs rattling against each other. RPM dependant, freq increases with RPM. Goes away at about 6k rpm but comes back shortly after.

Is it the TC? I was having weird bucking/lockup past 50 mph problems so it seems this would finally be the last straw.

Any Ideas?

Well Im going to a trans shop tommorow to get it looked at. If they cant come to a conclusion I will take it to the dealer and get a G35 loaner for a couple days. Whoo. I guess thats the only good part about all this.

Well, got my car checked out and turns out its the trans pump, then tonight my trans stopped working completely. Is it time for another J30tt?

What the cost looking at? In us dollars.

I know you can get the engine and trans package for about 1500 but what about all the custom parts?

I could do all the work myself, the only thing I need is a cherry picker.

it would run you around US 3K if you are doing all the work yourself, that is counting most of the parts (fabbed or not, including an engine and transmission, that i got for 1500 canadian, excluding a hoist, i got mine for 200 canadian so about 170 US) and services that you will need (some welding, and threading), it takes a little shopping to find a good deal, but if i did it, then anyone can

time wise, it is around a week or so of constant work if you have everything you need (i'll make a list), keep in mind that most of the time was spent on figuring out solutions to certain problems (that is for my swap), so with the solutions ready, and a correct order of events, if i'm to do it again, i can be done in one week

Sounds good. Ill have some calling around to see how much I can get a trans in for. If its more than 1500 then I am seriously considering the swap.

A list of all the need would be nice. Im sure I can find a good deal on a hoist, if not my neighbor has one in his garage lol.

Remember you have to use the stock J30 trans with the swap, you cant use the Twin Turbo trans which is basically the Q trans. So if you do the swap your going to have to get a new trans either way...

When looking for a used trans, get one that was freshly taken out... If they dont know how long its been sitting or its been more than 6 months dont buy!

you have to get a transmission either way, but if you are doing a swap, and planning to boost the engine, then i suggest that you get the TT transmission (comes in the package of the JDM), the only modification needed to swap the transmission is that you have to get a custom drive shaft (one piece preferebly, it is lighter, and highly recomended for a TT swap, moreover, it recovers lost horsepower, it costs around 350$ canadian in montreal), also swapping the wiring from your current transmission to the TT (1/2 an hour job), and then you are good to go

i have ordered the custom drive shaft from a local shop in montreal, and i have already done the wiring swap (when i thought that the transmissions were a direct swap), but i have returned the wiring to the J's transmission so i can be mobile till i get the drive shaft (in a week or so)

i have looked up transmission prices for the J in my area, it costs around 900 canadian (average price, and not the stock J, but the N/A 300zx, they are the same), i remember that one website from toronto was selling JDM transmissions for really cheap, i think they were not more than 250 canadian, i'll look it up again and get back to you

question for elwesso, why shouldnt we get a transmission that has been sitting for more than six monthes, just curious, because the TT transmission has been sitting for a while, and i have not tested to see if it works yet, could that cause any internal damage, and can i avoid having probelms by some precautionary measures??, i'd appreciate your feedback on this, thank you

Reason is, unlike engines, more than half the fluid stays inside the trans. As the fluid breaks down from age it eats anything thats not metal (gaskets, solenoids, switches, seals, etc).... Plus being exposed to the elements vs being inside the car doesnt help either.

Iwould double flush... Drain the pan, put in fresh fluid, then do it a couple more times until you get nice looking fluid. Add some BG QUICK CLEAN FOR AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS and then get it mechanically exchanged.

Man this is looking good so far, but I dont want to get in over my head.

I figured it would be cheaper to buy the enigne and trans from JDM and do it myself rather than just payin like 1500 for a new trans from a shop

Just realize what you're in for... its a lot different to do it on paper than it actually takes. Id say, come up with the most conservative figure in your head and multiply it by 2.... Have you ever done fabrication before? Ever made custom mounts? Do you have a welder or easy access to a welder? have oyu ever done custom wiring? Know how to solder?

Not trying to prod, just dont want you to render your car more useless than it already is (bad trans)....
