Did you have an accident or fall or did it just tear due to abuse/stress?

Some people have injuries that arent severe enough to require surgery. What does the imaging show?

I hate the idea of surgery, so for now biking and padded knee bandages keep things in working order.

I had the surgery for it about a year ago, you might get lucky if its not torn completely then they might be able to repair it, a part of mine actually ripped off and was moving around in my knee causing all sorts of pain. funny thing is i did mine while extreme sledding to, except my version involved a honda 300ex

i tore mine playing indoor soccer, my cleat got stuck in the turf and i pivoted on the same foot that got stuck, and i heard it pop, but i was too into the game to pay any mind to it. the next day it was hurting like hell but i figured it was a really bad sprain. so i rested it for while and i kept playing soccer for about another month and it still hurt and swelling up so i went to the dr, got an mri and they said it was torn and i needed arthroscopic surgery. i was nervous at first, really nervous in fact. but the day of the surgery they prepped me and had in the gown, they shaved my knee, set up the IV( i hate needles). i was still nervous for a while but i calmed myself down by being positive about everything. as soon as the staff wheeled me into the operating room i knocked out. i woke up a couple of hrs later still groggy and my dad came in to help me get my clothes back on. i was in a soft cast from my mid-thigh to about my calf. when i got back home i was knocked out from the prescription meds. i was in the cast for over a week, when the dr removed it everything was good, there were only 3 scars about half an inch in length around my knee where the scope went in. of course my knee was tight and i had to take physical therapy for 6 wks. the dr said he couldnt repair it so he removed the damaged tissue. and he said there was more than the mri showed, turned out i had a ruptured tendon and bone contusion. its been about 3 years since the surgery and my knee is 100% better.

Jesus...I tore one of my Peroneal Tendons in my ankle playing indoor soccer. The instant it happened I was down for the count and screaming like a baby. Intense pain until I got that sweet sweet morphine. I can't even imagine being able to walk off the arena.
I'd rate it on the same pain level as green-twigging my tibia and fibula, also playing indoor soccer. Something about a really grippy surface, sticky shoes, and constant abrupt direction changes...

yeah hard ground cleats with turf = injury waiting to happen. the recovery time wasnt too bad at all, i was out of soccer for 6 months. but physical therapy and working on rehabilitating my knee really helped speed it up. just the first time back on the field, i was very cautious lol. the only thing now is when theres weather change, i sometimes feel my knee begin to ache.

If you lead an active life and are in the position to do so, I recommend getting the surgery and just getting the whole thing fixed. A few years ago my dad tore his ACL and his Meniscus while preparing for a karate tournament. He had to have surgery, but his surgeon talked him into taking a conservative route and just doing the absolute minimum. That was not the best idea for a telephone lineman who liked to do Tae Kwon Do in his spare time. For the next couple of years he had serious issues with his knee popping out of place under stress. He eventually had to have surgery again to fix what should have been fixed the first time.

Granted, the ACL was a bigger deal than just a meniscus and he was like 45; I still think you may want to consider just getting it fixed initially so you can be done with it.

I did my meniscus and my MCL about 6 years ago. Partially tore both. No surgery. Sucked hard for the first year or so, but it's not bad anymore. Just had to work up the muscle in my leg to keep everything stable.
