I have a habit of putting more fuel into the tank after the pump handle automatically shuts off. Usually I can get a good half gallon or more into my Versa this way.A friend of mine who listens to those 2 constantly giggling auto idiots on the radio told me I shouldn't do that because it screws up the charcoal cannister or something. Do new cars even have them anymore?I tried to research it in the Versa manual but didn't find anything.

What's a mother to do?

What I usually do is let the car fill up and sit in my car to take a quick 1 min nap...after I hear the click I get up go to the tank because by that time the gas has gone down a little more and air has came up making a little more room in the gas tank. I then pull the handle again *click* car filled up.

I don't think you are doing any harm but EV will probably bash in here in a sec. As long as you arn't those people out there filling up going *click**click**click**click**click**click**click**click* i'm like WTFFFF.

Nah... no bashing from me. Just watch out for "pump Nazi" Sapphire.

I don't fill up any more after the click, just because I use debit and I don't need to round my cost off... and also because it can interfere with trying to run tallies for fuel economy.

As far as damage to the car goes, i can't speak to this because I don't know.

Wont do damage. That's not a bad habit. Worse is not tithgtening the gas cap enough. Computer could throw a code...

No gas for you!

Topping off the gas tank can result in your paying for gasoline that is fed back into the station's tanks because your gas tank is full. The gas nozzle automatically clicks off when your gas tank is full. In areas of ozone nonattainment, gas station pumps are equipped with vapor recovery systems that feed back gas vapors into their tanks to prevent vapors from escaping into the air and contributing to air pollution. Any additional gas you try to pump into your tank may be drawn into the vapor line and fed back into the station’s storage tanks.

Gasoline vapors are harmful to breathe. Gasoline vapors contribute to bad ozone days and are a source of toxic air pollutants such as benzene. Evaporation from the spillage of gas from overfilling can occur, contributing to the air pollution problem. Remember you pay for the gas that evaporates or is spilled on the ground.

You need extra room in your gas tank to allow the gasoline to expand. If you top off your tank, the extra gas may evaporate into your vehicle’s vapor collection system. That system may become fouled and will not work properly causing your vehicle to run poorly and have high gas emissions.

Topping off your gas tank may foul the station's vapor recovery system. Adding more gas after the nozzle has automatically shut off can cause the station's vapor recovery system to operate improperly. This contributes to the air pollution problem and may cause the gas pump to fail to work for the next person.

I was one of those people when I was driving the Bertone... Hey! the opening for the gas tank is along the top instead of through the side... So the feedback was all wrong and the nozzle always trips.
