I Just attempted to take the top speed govener on my 1991 240sx hatchback off, i put an I/O switch to the correct wire and that works, i have a california car, so if the wire is cut for more than like 5 minutes (maybe its a # of miles) the engine light goes on, so i rigged it to a switch and when i wanna go past the regular speed cut i just flip the switch and i'm fine until i drive too long like that, then the engine light comes on and i have to reset it.

Anyways the problem i ran into is that at about 123-125 MPH or so with the speed sensor wire disconected i hit some sort of fuel cut/govener again... The tach is at only 4800 +/- 100 RPM...

Is there a Rev limiter in 5th gear that is lower than the rest of the gears? could that be the reason that it is running into that sort of thing at 4800 in 5th (123-125 MPH or so)...

BTW i tested this safely, so plz don't flame...

Galen

yea, the fuel cut is different in 5th gear on the old 240s, or so ive heard, a friend of mine has a 93 and had the EXACT same problem, rigged his to a switch, and the damn fuel cut off hit him everytime, he just got a new ECU (not just to solve this, he had other mods too), good luck man, try remapping ECU

you could search for this, it has been discussed many times. Unplug the 5th gear sensor from the transmission. Problem solved.

but unplugging the sensor (or cutting the wire to the ecu) would screw the gauge cluster, right? either the speedo or tach would go dead in 5th or 4th (whatever sensor u pull). im afraid to pull my sensor for fear of messing my gauges...-Enzo

Yes you unplug it. Mine went bad and cut at 5000 rpms under normal driving. I just unpluged it. Next I need to cut the speed sensor wire going to the ecu. Ill test it out and let you guys know what happens.

I think i'd go for the switch idea rather than just a cut...

I cut the wire and added a toggle switch going to the ecu and I still have the limiter problem it dosen't stall the same as it did before, its more of a studdering now when I hit 115mph. It would only goto 111mph before I cut the wire and then the car would just stall like it was running out of gas. The wire is the 8th one down on the left of the ecu harness yellow wire w/ green stripe. It took me about five minutes to even get the balls to cut it. I just ran the wires over by the driver in the dash and then stuck a 2 lead toggle switch, that i can switch of and on. When you flip the switch off the check engine light comes on doesn't seem to do anything wrong but don't quote me on that. Tonight was the first time I tested it. I have heard that if you unplug the 5th gear sensor that it screws it up and the car does nothing when you shift into 5th. I don't know what they meant by nothing, but I'll soon find out and let you guys on the forum know.

It still goes into gear if thats what your refering too. Theres no reason it shouldnt. Ive had my 5th gear wire unplugged for 2 months. Nothing bad has happend or will happen. I just havent hd the time to cut the speed limiter wire on the ecu side.

I know this is kind of anal, but make sure you people are being safe exceeding 110mph. Bad things start to happen to tires/suspension components under that kind of stress, not to mention danger to other people. Do it on the track please, not on the street, you should NEVER need to use speeds in excess of 100mph.

Ok, how many times does the answer have to be posted?!?

Unplug the 5th gear sensor

The ONLY function this sensor has is for the secondary governor, that's it. It doesn't tell the gnomes in your car to stop the engine if you shift into 5th gear with it unplugged. I've had the switch on my speedo wire and my 5th gear sensor cut for quite a while, it works fine, nothing goes wrong.

Kind of wondering, if you unplug that sensor would you give a place for transmission oil to leak out of? I suggest leaving the sensor in and cutting the wire to it, or if you can unplug the harness at the sensor even better.

Thats what we mean. You dont actually remove the whole sensor, you just unplug it at the part that unplugs.
