I will be starting a new project on my 91 q45, and I will be raising the stakes on this project with a projected output of 650hp, I will start by contacting some old engine builders who I have talked too in the past about the q45 race engines, top engine builders like ed pink and the genius behind publishing the datsun nissan engine rebuild book, Frank Honsowetz. my engine will be dismantled down to the core, I will be upgrading the stock pistons with forged high compression pistons and custom rods, I will also be sending out the cams to be custom grinded by crower cams, who has also done some cam work on my turbocharged datsun 240z, I will of course have to change my stock injectors, and to supply more fuel for this hungry beast, also the oil pump setup will be modified, I donot like the small chain setup thats on the oil pump, there will also be many other changes to the engine and driveline, I will keep everyone informed on the progress of this project so please stay tuned in,Project X45

I see dollars flying out of your kazoo!

Be sure to check the VH/VK forum.

No way to obatin 650HP without boost on the street, which brings a whole lot of other solutions required with lubrication, cooling and drivetrain.

Real question is the balance between ultimate power and engine life....what good is 500, 600, 700HP if the motor only lasts 10,000 miles? Big difference in race and street built motors. I kinda like stock power for a reliable 300,000+ miles in a daily driver.

It seems as tho money's not a big issue if he's serious about this so 500,600, 700 hp is reeaaally good..even if it only lasts 10k miles...Of course we all know I am a power junky

Hmm, wonder if I can fit eight turbos in my Q...

Hello maxnix it seems that you where not around when the era of true hp was made thru large jet carbs and high compression motors and lets not forget the good ole lumpy cams. you need to go deep into the history of the infiniti q45 engine way back when it was in the indy racing developement years, I have had 3 jdm q45 engines, some which where rebulit to make some real hp, if you do a search on your web you will find that there are still some of these older q45 race engines available, the price maybe steep for most but for the very few they are within reach for a price. ive had plenty of turbocharged performance cars, but for me the vh45 is a much easier break down and build up, and plus there is not enough room for me to really do what I would like to do, and that is to have twin turbo application, but the engine bay is just to small, a single turbo has been done, but I would sure like to see a twin turbo q45 in the engine bay. im lucky enough to have the funds to dump into the vehicles that I want to make run fast and be reliable.

Oh, I saw the years of SAE overrated horsepower from big blocks. Dirty engines at 9 mpg that are out run by today's enigines at half the size.

Indy engine was rather recent, not way back. And those engines could not be run on the street even if you had racing gasoline available everywhere.

All the horsepower numbers published prior to 1972 or 1973 were Gross horsepower figures as measured on dyno without any acc. drive components installed{alternator/ac compressor/ps pump,etc} after that, NET horsepower figures were required {measured as motor was to be installed in vehicle with all accessories installed}

For instance, we had a 1970 Cadillac Eldorado that had a 8.2 litre {500 cubic inches} V8 that was advertised as having 400 horsepower{gross}, which really put out only about 320 horsepower if measured NET like all engines after 1972- 1973. At 8.2 litres, it is just slightly more powerful than the almost 1/2 sized G50 4.5 litre V8

Same with all the old Corvettes and other muscle cars of the era, those big HP numbers were mostly smoke and mirrors- a current 2008 Vette makes more true power than the old monster motors of our memories.TODAY is really the "golden days" of powerful cars that handle well.

Nevertheless, I still find the classics to be the most beautiful cars.

If by "classics" you mean 50's and 60's cars (Wherefore art thou oh Duesenberg, Pierce Arrow, Cord, Auburn?), then that is because you never drove them. There are a bunch of old geezers buying restored ones at auctions becuase they never got to go all the way with Donna in their Falcon 6 cylinder three on the tree stripper, but they are sure they could have if only they had that 442.

Most econo boxes will outrun and out handle them today, not to mention out last them.
