Recently purchased 93 q45 with timing chain issue and I see that there is an oil build up - never have had car running so I dont know if this happened over a long peiod of time. Oil on the the alternator and top of valve cover, passenger side. Valve cover does not appear to be leaking looks like it may be coming from oil return or pcv. Please enlighten me. Should I look to clean the motor and change hoses? Is this a common problem fot this year model? Thanks for any advice.

Well, you may want to R&R the top of the motor as it probablyy needs it.

This would include the valve covers.

Wash engine or add some dye to oil to see where leak is. Probably just last owner's carelessness when filling oil.

Agreed. Any Idea what parts this would entail?

Yes, I thought about that bet as Wes says, and I paraphrase, "its a q45 so can't possibly be that smple." LOL. I will check that out before I go to any more trouble. Any idea what type of dye to use?

Don't waste your money with dye. Clean the motor thoroughly (Be careful around the electronics) Remove the fan, clutch and belts. Remove the lower engin shroud (if it has one). Remove all the hoses and plastic, and use Simple Green, hand brushes and rags. Takes about 4 hours on the motor. When you get it all clean, change the oil. Drive it a few days, and the oil leaks should start showing up.

Chances are, the valve cover gaskets are hard and cracked. Don't bother trying to tighten them, it won't help.

You might want to take the opportunity to clean the throttle body, EGR, plenum, and intake hoses while you are in there. Buy a couple cans of MAF cleaner or Throttlebody cleaner and 3 or 4 rolls of paper towels. Get some long brushes and Q-tips to get the plenum and throttlebody clean. Remove the intake box, and clean it because it is probably full of leaves and dirt.

When you are done, throw away the shirt you are wearing.

You should have a new appreciation for INFINITI, and the tiny little Japanese that built the darn thing!
