CNET Digital Dispatch just sent me their daily dispatch wherein they ranked the top ten ugliest cars (since when did they start reviewing cars?). Here is the link:

http://crave.cnet.com/4326-1_1..._thmb

The Nissan Quest was on their list, but not the Versa (course if they put the Versa on the list I stop reading right there ). I don't agree with all their choices but the Subaru Tribeca literally made me say 'oh my god'.

That Tribeca is pretty horrible. As for the Quest, I think it looks quite alright... for a van.

No Gremlin?! That list should be called top 10 2007 ugliest cars we've ever seen.

They didn't specify that well when they wrote the article, but that is exactly what the article is.

Yeah, most of those were justified for being up there. I'm a huge Subaru fan, but their designs have been lackluster lately (except the Legacy GT), but the Tribeca, first time I saw it, made me cry.

Glad to see someone else thinks the Element is one of the ugliest cars in existence.

I haven't seen the GMC Acadia in person, but I think that is the one I would probably remove from the list.

Sadly, I'd have to replace it with the '07 Sentra.

Not a big fan of the Sentra, huh?

I was actually down to the Versa, Sentra and Toyota Matrix when choosing a new car. The Versa won out quite easily. I don't think the Sentra is ugly, but I was disappointed in its styling. I thought it was too much of a "safe" design. They didn't take any risks with it and it turned out to be pretty average. It's a lot better than many other makes, but for Nissan, it wasn't up to par; especially compared to what I consider to be bold styling for the Versa HATCHBACK. Nothing against the sedans or the people who have them, but I kind of feel the same way about the sedan as I do the Sentra. The only difference is I guess it makes more sense with the former since it is an entry level model.

The Sentra has long been losing favor for me. Its newest iteration has only one saving grace... its SE-R version.

But when you compare feature to feature, you can buy a Versa with almost all the same goodies as a Sentra, for a couple grand less. You'll also have a car with more interior room, about the same cargo capacity, and smaller physical dimensions for easier parking. That, to me, is a no-brainer.

Plus I really don't like the pseudo-altezzas on the Sentra. They were well executed on the Altima, but not the Sentra.

Yeah, I'm partial to the B13 chassis, as that was my first car. I had a '93 (non SE-R) 5-speed coupe, and I loved that car. The only reason I sold it was to get something a little bigger and safer...at 165k it was still purring like a kitten. I've never liked another Sentra after the B13 chassis...the B14 and 15 were uninspired and cheap looking, to me.

I liked that the B13 had strong styling cues from the Datsun 510, as the same designer was responsible for both.

But back to topic, I think that the overall appearance of the Acadia isn't too bad. It's a Mini-van SUV mix, and while boring, it isn't hideous in a Pontiac Aztek sort of way. The MDX looks terrible, what was Acura thinking?

"Pseudo" meaning similar/fake/imitation. Altezzas are the clear tail lights, popularized by the Toyota Altezza, known state side as the Lexus IS300. Now they are popular "fast and furious" mod fodder for folks who think it's still 2001.

I actually love the styling of the Quest, but I agree with EV; the Sentra belongs on that list. The Sentra is hideous from stem to stern, and those taillights are the ugliest in the industry. The interior isn't bad; I actually like the Sentra's interior. Everything else can go. I'm surprised they didn't include the Scion xA... Now THAT is an ugly car!

They could have easily made a top 30 ugliest cars list... there are tons of cars out there that aren't very nice to look at... I'd agree with their choices for the most part.

Before I even checked out the list, I thought it was the perfect place for the Aztec. Looks to me like they changed their mind halfway down the body, front and back, and started over with a whole new body. But I guess it'll have to wait for the top 30...

Well, thankfully, Pontiac took that terrible joke off the market already...and I believe this list is a compilation for new/current models.

You're right though, the Aztek should probably #1 worst of all time, or at least in the last few years. It makes every one of these vehicles on this list look like art museum material. I would like to have been a fly on the wall in the board room where that design was given the final "okay". How they ever let that monstrosity out to the public still has me completely perplexed.

The Aztec looks like a late 80's Pontiac LeMans mated with a Chevy Avalanche. THE ABSOLUTE ugliest car ever built was a Citroen product. I forgot the year/model...

wow.. some of those i can partially agree with.. but a couple.... what the hell was cnet thinking??

The Acura MDX is a beautiful SUV inside and out (has some nice power to it too, but that's not aesthetics)

The Escalade EXT - a horrible car in many other aspects, but I think it LOOKS great, especially with the upgraded wheel package and such.

And while the Q7 may not be the BEST looking car, I think Audi did a really good job with it.

I could definitely think of uglier cars.. like.. the Yaris, the Dodge Calibur, the Chevy Malibu Maxx etc.

I'll add my little commentary on their choices (critiquing auto styling is one of my favorite pass times):

1: Acadia: Not only not ugly, but actually attractive. Clean, simple, with attractive horizontal tail lights instead of the cliche truck-style vertical ones. If the Acadia's on this list, every other generic SUV and crossover should be, too.

2: Element: Definitely can't agree. I think it's a fine looking car. Not beautiful, but certainly not ugly. Yeah, the early gritty-plastic-panel versions were goofy, but the one they show is even the newer fully painted model. Not remotely ugly, let alone top-ten.

3: Apen: Yeah. It's odd looking. Even ugly. BUT: it's not even close to as nasty as the car it's a re-nose of: the Durango.

4: MDX: YES. SO VERY VERY ugly. Mind bendingly, reality distortingly, common-sense defyingly ugly. Whoever was responsible for the new MDX should get a job designing fragmentation weapons for the military or join forces with Chris Bangle to build the most powerful evil force the automotive world has ever seen.

5: Tribeca: Absolutely. Terrible styling all around, from the goofy nose to the "what the hell is that" gaping notch in the liftgate that dwarfs the license plate.

6: HHR: No. Not even close to ugly. In fact, I think it's a great looking car. The tail light design, curving hood...all of it is great. The only downside is that it's still a Caval...Cobalt at it's heart.

7: Escalade EXT: WHAT? Ugly? Yes, the fender vents are idiotic, but the rest is beautiful. Aside from the Infiniti QX56, it's the best looking SUV ever sold.

8: Rondo: Ugly? Sure. Top-ten ugly? I think not. The name is definitely top-ten worst material, though.

9: Q7: Goofy looking, ugly, both. BUT, again, it's NOT as ugly as either of it's platform brethren. The Touareg is far uglier. And the Cayenne even worse. At least the Q7 benefits from a large grille (befitting a tall vehicle) and audi's styling cues instead of looking like a height-stretched sedan.

10: Quest: Another odd looker. But not ugly, ESPECIALLY for a minivan. In fact, it's far, far, far, far and away better looking than any other minivan out there save the Odyssey, which itself could use some work (Honda's new big-lips grilles are horrible). At least the Quest looks interesting, instead of like a toaster.

What's missing that absolutely should be on this list (especially in place of the non-uglies I pointed out?)

Toyota Tundra. This thing looks like an insulting caricature of a truck. Absolutely everything about it is intentionally over-the-top. It's like a 120 lb nerd with inflatable muscles.

Mercedes Benz R-class.This one's so ugly it hurts my mind to even try to explain it's ugliness. If you look at it and still wonder why I say that, you need to schedule a CT scan, because something's broke up there.

Ugly may not be the right word for it but it is just too 'functional' looking, meaning it looks like it should be delivering something. From the rear it looks even more boxy (almost a perfect square), not unlike the rear view of a hummer, although the proportions are different.

I dont think the two new GMC/Saturn crossovers are ugly at all. I was actually impressed that GM could create sometyhing so slick looking ... although i like the saturn version better they both are nice. The tailights on the GMC im not a fan of..and i mean those litte metal inserts over the lights...kinda kill the look

I'm just going to leave it at you were being sarcastic.

Also, I see nothing wrong with the Tundra. I'm not really a truck guy, but I think it looks similar to all the other big bodied trucks. I kind of like the roundness that you call "muscles". Gives it a little distinction too.

Reading everyone's opinion on the styling of these cars makes me glad that the cars exist. After all, if there weren't ugly cars, how would you be able to contrast against the cars you DO like?

I think the diversity in the auto market is a wonderful thing. and personally, I LIKE the way the Yaris looks. With the rounded nose, it reminds me of the distorted dogs that were so popular on greeting cards. Definitely something I would buy for my sister in law, especially over that abomination of a "new beetle" that VW put out. And Ford can keep the Mustang.

Still not a fan of the HHR or PT Cruiser, though. I think the PT cruiser (from the advertisements) was supposed to become Chrysler's "tuning" car for the Fast and the Furious kids, and it instead became the retro-comeback king.

the HHR looks like Chevrolet tried to make their own retro-comeback and failed.

I am glad they are out there, though, I appreciate my Versa even MORE when I park next to a car I dislike.

Has anyone seen the new Honda CR-V? The first time I actually saw one I (in all honesty) thought it was in a front-end collision, until I got a little closer... and gasped in awe that someone would design that INTENTIONALLY!!!

Ok the Honda Element....from the first time I saw one on the road I said what the HELL is that thing...man it's ugly. Still think so.

I havent seen a CR-V anywhere but on the commercials yet but I think it actually looks good. Just goes to show you that everyone has different tastes.

My vote for the ugliest cars ever goes to.......second place: VW "The Thing". Remember that one? It looked like it was made from a galvanized garbage can. And the ugliest car ever.......1962 Plymouth Valiant. A friend of mine had one in high school. Eventually he had to stop driving it to school due to the abuse heaped on him. Push button automatic transmission....LOL.

I completely agree.I don't know what they were thinking with the headlights and grille. It looks like it's smiling at you...and also mildly retarded.I'm glad Nissan's taking a different route with the Rogue...all the other micro-SUVs I can think of (save Ford's Escape) are hideous.

Interesting point, but I don't think I'd appreciate the beauty of a Ferrari Maranello or BMW 750il (E38) any less if the world were devoid of the cars on this list. Certainly makes me feel good when I park next to a brand new Lexus or BMW in my 14 year old Nissan and find that my Maxima is far better looking, though.
