If you don't have 10 favorite novels in mind right away, just post however many you can think of. They can be whatever genre you wish - sci fi, pure fiction, historical fiction etc. And from whatever era. Note: Herodotus is technically a "historian" but his recollections include enough fictional and fantastical elements to warrant it being judged as a novel, IMO. Feel free to be equally liberal in your selections.

1. Hemingway - For Whom the Bell Tolls2. Herodotus - The Histories3. Vonnegut - Cat's Cradle4. Fitzgerald - The Great Gatsby5. Jennings - Aztec6. Clavell - Shogun7. Vonnegut - SlaughterHouse-Five8. Hemingway - To Have and Have Not9. Shelley - Frankenstein10. Remarque - All Quiet on the Western Front

I have an ulterior motive for starting this thread - I need more ideas for books to read, so I would like to hear about your favorite novels. Let's confine it to novels only, for the sake of brevity I'm omitting plays, short stories and poetry - there's just too many to list. Have fun!

Uuugh, I can't remember the authors all that well, but...

1. Grapes of Wrath2. Black Holes and Time Warps3. A Brief History of Time4. The Professor and The Madman5. Ender's Game

Sorry about the absence of the authors... I'll edit them in later, and post my last five. You'll have to give my some time top think about it.

Grapes of Wrath is about the Great Depression and Manifest Destiny, Black Holes and Time Warps and A Brief History of Time are both astrophysics, The Professor and The Madman is about the creation of the Oxford English Dictionary, and Enders Game just has a really cool plot, so to speak.

I have both of Hawking's books and read them a long time ago - they're due for a re-read soon (now that I understand the concepts a little better).

I just finished Steinbeck's East of Eden recently (and NO, not because Oprah endorsed it...) and I felt it was so-so. The first half of the book was very well written, the second half dragged like a dead dog on a leash. I need to check out Grapes of Wrath soon, hopefully it will be better.

Lucifer's Hammer sounds familiar - I will give that a look.

Here are my favorite 20. My favorite 2 are Catcher in the Rye and Siddhartha. Both were life changing books for me. The rest are excellent reads. I could probably add about 10 or 15 to this list, plus I am a huge fan of greek mythology. So, hope you enjoy the reading.

Dante Alighieri - The Divine ComedyErich Remarque - All Quiet on the Western FrontKurt Vonnegut - Slaughterhouse FiveJD Salinger - Catcher in the Rye - (My favorite)George Orwell - Animal FarmErnest Hemingway - A Farewell to ArmsJohn Steinbeck - The Grapes of WrathJames Joyce - UlyssesF. Scott Fitzgerald - The Great GatsbyW. Somerst Maugham - Of Human BondageHerman Hess - Siddhartha - (My other favorite)George Orwell - 1984Ayn Rand - Atlas ShruggedErnest Hemingway - The Sun Also RisesAldous Huxley - Brave New WorldHomer - The Illiad and The OdysseyGeofrey Chaucer - Canterbury TalesMark Twain - Huckelberry FinnAyn Rand - FountainheadWilliam Faulkner - Intruder in the Dust

Good list Ryan. If I had done a top 20 list, ours would be pretty similar. Salinger is also one of my faves (reading Franny and Zooey now).

I liked Clancy back in the day (like Hunt for Red October days)...but...I dunno, all those ultra-pop novels by Crichton/Grisham/Clancy/King/et al. really don't do it for me anymore. I find myself turning more to classic lit and more "underground" type of stuff as I get older and look for deeper meanings in the books I read.

I agree. I do enjoy Michael Crichton though. Classic Literature cannot be beat for the sheer deep meaning often involved in the story. I highly recommend everyone to read Siddhartha. Excellent book about the evil of materials and self-reliance.

Okay, time for my final five! We've got:

6. The Perfect Storm7. Treasure Island8. Robin Hood9. Don't Stand too Close to a Naked Man10. Slaughterhouse-Five

I had to look at my bookcase to remember what books I had read (I have a horrible memory).

The Perfect Storm, the movie was good, the book was better. Treasure Island and Robin Hood, both just kinda all time favorites. Don't Stand too Close to a Naked Man, the autobiography of Tim Allen, a very entertaining read. And Slaughterhouse-Five, just an overall good book.

Why is it that most of the selections people are using are crap we had to read in English class? Orwell and Rand are fine, I mean, if you're down with the allegories, whatever. But Gatsby and the Grapes of Wrath? C'mon! Who's going to throw out Knowles' A Seperate Piece? Achebe's Things Fall Apart? Anyone? They're both crap! So don't!

the obvious ones---loved the fountainhead from ayn rand anything from hemingway, steinbeck, twain. had the great pleasure of meeting kurt vonnegut in person, just like his books, funny, smart, insightful and personable.

if you're into fiction, that's a little out there, but funny and weird, yet so intelligent (think monty python meets vonnegut meets twain)---TOM ROBBINS--pretty much any of his works. highly recommended. jeff
