Wonder what I could get a year-old Optima for? Not a bad car...

The rest of that list are just scrap metal.

The Optima's a decent low-end sedan. A nice around-town sputterer that you wouldnt weep over after fender benders and parking lot dings.

A 2001 with 20-30k on the odo sells for $8000-$9000.

And a 2001 Daewoo Leganza with 10k sells for around $3500. :P

Isn't that the value decline when you take delivery and drive off the lot ~~~30%.

If you look at those cars, they are cars everyone has and nobody wants...... They make great first cars for teenagers (not worth much, so if they mess it up, eh, its a KIA)

I dont quite understand Buick's depreciation. Its a semi-luxury brand with ultra-reliable products. And no less boring than Toyota.

As math major numbers like make me see red. Those values are useless the 95% of population who can't invert them in their heads. The whole concept of depreciation is so badly communicated to consumers.

Take the first car - the KIA spectra- they are saying that at five years old and 75K miles it's LOST 74.11% of their value (so it's now worth 25.89% of it's sticker price.) Today's Spectra is priced around $14,000 - so in five years it's projected the car will be worth - $3600.

Considering virtually zero mataince will be needed (+oil changes) depreciation and taxes are the major costs of ownership.

The car will cost around 15 cents a mile to drive brand new for the first five years (equal to a 12 year old Q45). Of course one's a tin can with wheels and the other a leather fitted tank.

I wish total-cost-of-ownership tables were avaliable for a range of years and models. That would require a tremedous amount of research, but it would so handy. Imagine you see a old 94Q on the lot, pull up a web site and you read last year the TCO was 22 cents a mile. You could easily compare that to the 98 maxima sitting next to it - if the difference was 5 cents a mile that might really sway your decision.

The Buick is listed as a result of fleet sales. Both Buicks are rental car staples and as a result, lowers the residual for the both.

Probably the same reason the dodges make the list. I'm a regular intrepid rental guy if they are out of Devilles.

Yeah, I hate when kids try to show off in crap cars. This kid in a Hyundai S coupe (small, ugly and slow) was trying to show off to a bunch of girls walking on the sidewalk by driving slowly down the middle of the road and trying to talk to them out the window. I was behind him and getting annoyed, so I finally just blew around him and showed him the Infiniti badge on my trunk.

I'm 17.

Since we're all younger consumers here..does anyone else think it's just plain stupid when companies come out with cars "aimed at the younger buyers" and have "radical" "hip" designs?(i.e. Honda pilot, Toyata Matrix, and the Subura Baja)

Im sorry, but some of those new radical ideas are just sin. I think most young kids would be pretty happy behind a wheel of nice sporty sedan or coupe.

Yeah, I'm 19, and I'm really starting to wonder what kind of kid would absolutely be head over heels in love with the likes of the Toyota Echo, Scion, or Honda Element. I'm starting to think I should write some of these manufacturers and tell them their marketing research is dead WRONG.

Absolutely. Recently Motor Trend had an article about cars for kids in high school, and it was mostly boxy SUV type things like the Honduh Element. The manufacturers seem to think that young people want boxy and ugly with no power. I would never trade my G20t for an Element, Matrix, etc. Manufacturers need to go back to their market research departments.

Its a honda, who cares??? We get an infiniti or nissan, and they waste their money on boxy, ugly, underpowered things they call automobiles.......

The matrix (aka pontiac vibe) are OK, it is pretty cool to have one of those 4 bangers have like an 8000 redline, even though it sounds like its gonna 'splode when it gets up there...... We were thinking about one, but we opted not, and im glad we did, because they are everywhere!!!!!!!

The Toyota Scion BBx is a slammed miniature Chevy Astro with all of the non-style AND none of the usefulness! And the Aztek... seen it driven mostly by retirees. Its damn quiet inside at 75mph. Its quite clear that Toyota, a brand that spurs as much excitement as bottled water, is trying WAY too hard.

The best youth-aimed product to come along in a while is the Infiniti G35, along with the Dodge Neon SRT-4 (for poor kids).

I would not say the G35 is aimed at the youth market. Anything that stickers in the low 30k range generally is NOT aimed at youth. Heck, if a mid 30s executive making 60k per year can't buy one, it's doubtful the vast majority of yewts (see the movie "My Cousin Vinny" for the reference) can get anywhere near it. :)

The G35 is not geared for the youth. Man it took me 13 years of hard work and saving to puchase my G. But when I'm in my G, I feel like I'm in my late teens or early 20s. I love my car.

Even though i don't like the neons...would have been nice to have a brand-new anything when i started driving. My old civic sucked!
