I've been wanting to take a couple of pictures on this trip as there is a great photo op in Mackinaw City where the Mackinac Bridge is (Mackinac is pronounced the same as Mackinaw) that links the upper and lower peninsulas of MI. If any of you watch Dirty Jobs, you may have seen it. The bridge spans 5 miles, the road surface is 200' above the water with the towers 552' above the water. There are 42,000 miles worth of wire in the main cables. If anyone gets to travel to MI, I highly recommend coming to this area and heading to Mackinac Island.

But every time before, I either forgot, didn't have time, or didn't have a camera with me. I finally had time, a camera, and remembered. I also drive along the south coast of Lake Superior and I happened to be along the coast at sunset and it was a good one. Oh, and the new front bumper.

Found these pictures laying around on my computer that I forgot about. Lake Superior is bipolar. These are from a friend on board a ship shipping grain across the lake from my guess would be Duluth, MN to somewhere. This was probably one of the last trips of the season in November. Anyone interested in US maritime history, the greatest US maritime disaster occurred on the Great Lakes in the early 1900s in November, in which the month is famous for producing gale-force and hurricane-force winds, winds that also sunk the famous Edmond Fitzgerald.

Just to give you an idea of how big those waves are, here's the same ship in calm waters. Looks like we're talkin 30'+ swells. People who have shipped both on the seas and Great Lakes say the Great Lakes is more dangerous as they are famous for producing large swells in rapid succession that will sink almost any ship out there. The ship seems to be a Canadian boat out of Montreal.

I love the sunset picture OP. Car looks great as well.

And smocker, those pics are insane, especially the one with the wave crashing onto the ship.

Nice pics. I like the car/sunset ones, but big waves are some in deadly water is something I am really interested in.

your pictures = win!

that last sunset picture you have of the sunset reflecting off your hood is amazing... Actually, I liked it so much I made it my desktop wallpaper...

Pat yourself on the back, you have successfully arrived at "The Win Zone"

I'll send you a full-res copy if you want it for your desktop. I uploaded them only as 800x600 I think with the originals at above 3000x2300.

Haha, I've been in the Win Zone with photos for some time now...not to brag or anything, just have been. I did a shoot with the G back in June, there's a thread on that if you can find it. I have an eye for great photo ops for anything but people, although I'm getting better at people.

Unfortunately I don't have anymore deadly water pics. I wish I did and I wish the ones I had were high resolution...I'd make large format prints out of those with some custom frames.

What kind of camera are you using to take these nice shots?

Smockers,

looking at those photos brings back childhood memories of growing up in MI. I spent many a summer in the UP on Sugar Island where my family still has a summer cottage. Thanks for sharing those photos with that sweet ride.

Nice shots and a good looking car. Used to live in Green Bay, been over that bridge years ago. The wave shots remind me of the North Sea off the coast of Norway. Except your shots had blue water. Almost got sea sick looking at the photos.

Thanks guys. With the point-and-shoot, I've learned to get a little creative with the AF and all. When I can afford an SLR, I'll get one.

majorpanik, I haven't been to the Soo for years, has to be at least 10. My pictures were taken in the AuTrain area by Deer Lake. The UP is a great place to grow up.

Haha, I'm sure Deadliest Catch has got somethin to match those. You know, for living in the UP, I've never gone out snowmobiling on the trails, which is kinda sad because I've always wanted to do a trip by snowmobile. But I have 80 acres to do that on, so there's really no need haha.
