I was wondering if there's any such thing as "too much" motor oil ???

I think I overfilled on my last oil/filter change by accident. Is this bad?

Yes, it's bad. If the oil level is too high, the crankshaft will whip air into the oil.

What does the dipstick say?

You can suck oil out the dipstick tube with a pump, or siphin.

Yes, there is such a thing as too much oil.

Have you checked the oil level with the dip stick? Where is the oil mark sitting?

I would think that if it is more than a 1/4" or 6mm over the "H" mark, then you may need to remove some. I do not know what the overfill tolerance is on the Pathfinder.

Did you prefill your filter some before putting it on? If not, your filter will absorb some of the overage. if you did prefill the filter and then add extra oil, it all depends on where the oil sits on the stick.

If you did overfill and you are concerned, go to the hardware store and by some small diameter clear tubing. By at least the length of the dip stick plus 12".

the idea is to put the tubing down the dip stick tube and like with milk and a straw, put your finger over the hole on the tube and pull the tube out. This should create sufficient vacuum to extrac oil bit by bit.

I do not reccomend syphoning the oil by mouth...BAD idea.

It may be possible to rig a turkey baster to help with the suction process. Other fluid extractors can run up to $60.

Hey Chuck,

Thanks for the advice. The dipstick reads well over the "H Level", but I can double check just how much over tonight when I get home.

I think I'll just replace the oil prematurely.

Do you think this excess oil might have something to do with a Cylinder 6 Misfire (I haven't been able to find the ECM to check, but I think this is what has been happening)

Not sure how the oiling system interacts with the ignition system, but my guess would be, no.

Now, a misfire can be a number of things, but faulty, dirty plug, or coil cold be the issue. If it were an oil issue, would the misfire be present on more than one cylinder?

Unless oil is making its way up into the cylinder and fouling the plug, I would rule out the oil as the culprit.

How old are the plugs? Miles on them?
