Check the bushings in the rear suspension arms... Hell check all the bushings on the whole car's suspension as well as the condition of the steering rack. Sounds like toe is changing wildly while driving down the road.
As for the car buffeting behind a tractor trailer, some of that is normal as you pass into the turbulent air behind the trailer. Its normally a good indicator of when you're in within a good range for getting a bit of a tow from the hole he punches in the air... But if the buffeting is excessive, its another indicator that there may be something wrong with your suspension.
Polly bushing kits are cheap as hell, and if you need them new rear subframe bushings (not just inserts) are really nice as well. If you have horrible clunking from the back shifting and going on or off throttle quickly, subframe bushings may be shot. But from what you two have said, my money is on suspension arms... and a very small outside chance of wheel bearings.
