second time this year a car has flown at indy , time to slow em back down , you know its bad when mario wont touch a indy car after his flight last may (coarse he hit a tire or something)
Rena's tires were not warmed up enough is what I have heard. It was cool that morning and he hadn't warmed the tires up enough before he got on the throttle exiting the corner. He evidently got it loose and into the grass and spun it and the air caught it from behind and lifted it up and the rear wing hit the fence and spun the car around into one of the poles holding the fence basically cutting the car into two pieces and shattering the drivers tub where he was sitting. He hit with such great force that he bent the pole and broke it from the concrete barrier and that is what gave way and why the spectator walkway to the stands was damaged. The car and large debris never landed in the stands. The pole was ripped into the walkway and did minor damage to the front of the walkway and railing.
The Rena crash seems to be very similar to what happened to Kenny Brack in the IRL finale 2 weeks ago. The big difference is the impact of the tub to the fence. Brack's car disipitated the energy more before he hit anything substantial. He hit the fence more before he hit any steel pole that was set in concrete. Whereas Rena touched the fence and was then slingshoted into the pole sideways ripping the car in half basically. I am under the impression that his head hit the pole at full speed. It would have killed him instantly.
Mario's crash was similar. He hit a small piece of debris and the front of the car lifted sending him end over end 3 or 4 times before the car landed.
Now, I want to make sure that everyone knows that this is not official information. This is what I have heard so far from IMS officials, the media and some friends who are involved with the IRL here in town. I think it is fairly accurate and good information, but it is deffinetly not undisputed factual information.
