Could be either/or. White smoke sounds like coolant, but an open injector can cause similar problems as well. But you will know it's an injector because you will have a dead cylinder and you will see and smell fuel coming out of your exhaust (not good for the physical engine). I had this problem on one of My Ford Taurus SHO cars and it would produce white-colored smoke constantly and it was annoying. It seemed the problem was coming from the #6 injector staying open, so I changed injectors (not an easy task on this car) and it didn't help. I took it to the ford dealer, had them put it on their machine and those freaks told me it was the #6 injector and it would need to be changed. I told them the injectors were brand new and they said they still would need to be changed.
Now, what are the chances out of 6 brand new injectors, that the same #6 injectors is still stuck open? Bottom line is, that chance is one in gazillion and those guys thought I was some rookie trying to get his car to just run right. So after the process of elimination, I got a new ecu for $50 buck and "Voila" problem solved. Hope this story helped somewhat. Keep us posted on this as well.
