FINALLY

I am headed to the dyno with my KA-T tomorrow morning, 8am. I spent pretty much the whole day yesterday and today finishing things up, and everything is looking pretty good. Guys, I am freakin giddy about this! It has been 9 months that my car has been under the knife, and finally things are coming to a head. Wish me luck, pray nothing breaks, and dammit I will return with pics, video, and - most imprtantly - dyno charts!

And of course, a few pics of today's work:

The new Phat KA-T fuel setup:

Methanol tank and variable controller (cold pipe removed):

Wastegate and dump tube

M1 race methanol, ready for tomorrow (and beyond!):

Nice. Love the fuel setup. What kind of injectors are you using? That fuel rail, custom or someone makes it for the ka? Also, is there such a thing as race methanol? I thought methanol was just methanol...

so you cleaned the intake mani but not the valve cover! no wonder it looks ugly:P, btw what exhaust is that? looks like 2 exhausts ran side by side for some reason(my eyes!)

hope everything works for ya, even that big *** tank of methanol that you could put on the back for some grip(safety first, it has to be tight so it doesn't move)

good luck man.

i didnt know you broke your motor in already.

i know the tuning will be expensive so if you cant get high HP numbers this time, take your time and you'll get it next time.

thanks guys!

The motor isnt really broken in all that much.. I have about 100 miles on everything and a bunch of idle time, thats it. I will spend my first hour at the dyno just varying the load, working the engine in a little bit (I have the dyno for the entire day). That, I'm convinced, should be plenty.

The methanol I got locally- it is a 15 gallon barrel and I paid about 80 bucks for it. I'm mixing 50/50 with water so this tank should last me quite some time. I dont think there is any difference between regular methanol and "race" methanol, but it says "race" on the tank and it sounds sweet, doesnt it?

Haha the valve cover isnt done because I'm saving it for last. I am going to powdercoat it black and have the letters polished. Dont worry, I wont leave that ugly thing just sitting there!

The fuel setup is all straight from Ivan at http://www.phatka-t.com. The differences between this part, and the one I originally had from JWT is night and day-- simply awesome quality.

As far as power expectations, I am hoping for deep into the 400s. I wanted to touch 500 but I dont think it is going to be practical with this turbo and on the first try. I will be happy with anything in the 400s for now though.

I'll keep you guys updated!

400's???You better be in the 400's or you need to find a new guy to tune the EMS for ya.

But like Tony said, take your time brother. Make sure your motor is ready for those high boost runs. I don't want any excuses when I whoop your A$$ in a few months with my DIY setup...lol.

hahaha OK OK, I'll post this in this thread because we're not done.

Today I had a lot of problems getting the car to the dyno (25 miles away). She stalled on the highway once-- fixed it the first time and then the 2nd time I had to have her towed. Turned out to just be some silly wiring coming apart and a busted fuse- no big deal.

Annnnnyways, got her on the dyno very late during the day and could only spend a couple hours working through a lot of drivability type stuff. Got through a lot of the fueling, but havnt touched timing at all (running VERY retarded). Also the methanol is turned off for now and I'm only at spring pressure in the wastegate: 13 psi.

Results are, FOR NOW, 320 rwhp. Not too too bad considering the timing that has yet to be worked, and there are still some rich areas in the curve. There is still a TON of power waiting to come out of this engine. I'm having some ignition issues as well (missing badly when things get hot), but all will be resolved soon.

And let me tell you guys- I am of course aiming much higher, but 320 rwhp is freaking NUTS!

don't you think you should put some more miles on the car before tuning it? turbo's usually suggest at least 500 miles of break in, and since you've built your engine and all i think it would be a damn shame to break it in improperly...

correct me if i'm wrong here of course, but i just think it would just really terrible for something to go wrong because the engine was not really ready for what you threw at it (ie 400 hp)... make it last... of course i don't think you'll see immediate problems, but it could definitely shorten the life of the engine if everything isn't properly broken in and ready to go...

i've seen claims that porsche's get faster and better with age... once everything is settled in and really worn to perfection (kind of an oxymoron huh?) they make more power... i saw that in a magazine where they got the car and were testing it out over a long period of time... and after so many miles they dynoed it again and it laid down better numbers and nicer curves...

anyhow good luck with everything, good to hear it's all coming together finally... i had at least 2 months of time where i couldn't drive the car and now i can drive it but can't boost it all the way cause i have more work to be done... so all my new parts have gotten a thorough break in, but i'm antsy as hell now... it must feel good to see 320, even if it's only a fraction of what you're going to get... good luck.
