I was looking at prices on the Tomei RB28 stroker kit and im wondering. . .

What is a cooling channel, i.e. its purpose and benefit?

I think that Brian Crower was going to amke a RB stroker kit that was a little bit cheaper that the Tomei version. I believe the normal retail is around 6K.

damn acting pretty high and mighty $hitting on ppl like you ask some great questions yourself bud..

from looking at the website i think its something built into the pistons to help keep them cool with oil

Thanks for the reply Evo_bill you were very helpful.

Did I say I was going to buy it?

I just asked what the benifit of cooling channel was. Is it just needed for a car thats going to be running circuit races? Is it designed to extend the life of an engine that will endure high revs for a long period of time?

Yea, I read about Crower's kit somewhere. . .I dont remember what site it was on though.

I'm assuming the cooling channel is what gawdzilla was referring to. The stock RB26 pistons have cooling channels in them. It is basically a hollow area beneath the piston crown and above the wrist pin where oil can slosh in and absorb some of the heat from the piston before sloshing out and into the oil sump again.

The benefits are mostly to help keep the pistons cool during extended high revs, which translates into extended engine life. So you had it nailed down.

cooling channels are grooves machined along the compression height area of the pistons, this help cool the pistons on high powered setup.

look at the picture closely you'll see it:

*I edited this post after Boostsfed inserted a good picture describing cooling channels.*

Here is a pic showing the cooling channels on the RB26DETT pistons. Notice they are not on the RB25DET pistons.

they have a special kind of cooling channel plus the underside is coated so oil flows smoothly around them.

And I see the 25 piston showing the signs of not having one (discoloration). That's pretty neat.

rename the title of the thread while you're at it, helps with search results.

hahaha it could be! I had 3 sets of pistons at one point, but re-sold a couple off again as my project plans changed.
