so i went to the post office to pick up the ecu and the fan i got from rtsol, which, by the way, are really nice, and took them to the place i work at. i was bored and didnt have much to do while waiting for someone to get there and i dropped in the ecu. the car ran great. i proceeded to drive it around for a while and it was fine, maybe a little faster, but not too much. later i had to take my friend's mom to get her car from the volkswagen dealer. i drove out there and i got pretty close when my car started to cut out. it would start, but it wouldnt idle, and itwould die within a few seconds. i limped into the vw dealer's parking lot, and popped the hood. smoke poured out, yes not steam but actual smoke, and it was quite hot. i left it and came back a few hours later with a van and a tow rope, and when i took a look at it, i'd noticed that the bottom radiator hose was ripped off. it overheated badly, and i dont know what happened. guess ill just check the head for damage, probably replace the head gasket, and put that hose on and try again.

WOW! that sucks! just to be on the safe side, back off the timing a bit and be sure to run the best gas you can. its a jdm ecu so its tuned for their best gas which is alot better than ours. i just hope it wasnt detonation causing the overheat. hmmm...was the car running really rich? that could do it too. keep me posted on your situation, i really want to know how it runs with more boost!

what exactly are the maps on that ecu? what exactly does it alter, etc.? i always run the car on chevron 93 with octane booster, but yes, it was running rich. i hope i didnt warp the head or block with that one. it overheated pretty badly (the block and head were smoking). im out of town working right now, and i might not be back for a week, but ill run a leakdown test when i get back. ill try and check back tomorrow, but im on dialup, so i dunno if ill be able to.

thanks for hearing me vent, tim

by the way, what does the number on the ecu mean? ive always wondered. anyone know?
