I'm actually pretty sad for those who got ripped off but, I'm a little confused. The Amish decided to not change with the times so that they would remain independent and be immune from economic and social changes. . . right?

Now a significant number of them have lost their retirement money.

Ironic isn't it? I thought so.

i·ro·ny

–noun, plural -nies.
1. the use of words to convey a meaning that is the opposite of its literal meaning: the irony of her reply, “How nice!” when I said I had to work all weekend.

Nope, I don't find it ironic.

Irony:
Adverb
* S: (adv) ironically (contrary to plan or expectation) "ironically, he ended up losing money under his own plan"

Hate to inform you, Bonkers, but there are multiple meanings for the word irony.

Ah, so any investment that loses money is ironic (contrary to plan or expectation - by your definition) since people don't plan on losing money when they invest? Got it. Or, for that matter, anything bad that happens to anyone anywhere is ironic (unless, of course, they were planning on the negative action happening).

It's ironic because they're Amish, people who are opposed to any change since the 1700's. . . you know, back when there wasn't such a thing as retirement but when people worked til they died and handed everything down to the next generation who did the same thing over and over. The thought of them stockpiling and investing money to retire on the way us modern people do is a little amusing (they're opposed to change, right?).

edit-

another thought - the entire reason they do what they do, and live the way they live is to make so this s*** doesn't happen - that's why it's ironic.

That would be ironic. However, I believe that the Amish do what they do to remain humble. In fact, the only reason they would've had to invest is that they still need to be somewhat integrated into society (healthcare/etc). They have no interest in acquiring wealth or possessions. Unfortunately they have to conform somewhat in order to survive. So I would say it's actually more unfortunate that society places this burden on them and restricts them from living in the way they seem fit.
