"...and a growing body of research, including work done by my colleagues at Michigan, is establishing that exposure to violent media numbs people to the pain of others."
BULLSH*T.
There has NEVER been a single bit of conclusive, straightforward evidence to suggest that exposure to "violent media" has ANY affect on people sociologically or psychologically. Anyone who says otherwise is either selling something or an idiot. Or both.
The only way "violent media" could possibly have those effects is if someone was already broken in a big way. In which case it is NOT the "violent media" that's the problem, it's the person being broken. Normal, healthy people can tell the difference between real life and not real life. Even children can. It's been shown in studies (and unlike mister crap-spewer here, I'm not making s*** up as I go). The idea that a properly functioning human being is somehow being damaged by "exposure to violent media" is an insult to anyone capable of sentient thought.
Everyone reading this post, ask yourself right now: "Am I so stupid and psychologically vulnerable that exposure to violence in media could actually change who I am?"
If just the asking of that question doesn't have you choking on your own sense of self-respect, you probably DO need to see a shrink. This is why I have such a hard time understanding how the misconception that violence in media is harmful can be so popular and widely believed. None of the people supporting these kinds of claims have been "damaged" by the stuff. How are they immune?
It's all a crock of crap, fed by the seemingly common-sense idea that "that sounds sensible." People never bother to actually think about things. They just hear and repeat. They create supportive anecdotes in their minds, and twist their perspective of reality to suit their ideals. That's not how the world works. People don't become damaged by MEDIA, unless they have far more significant (and more attention-worthy!) pre-existing issues.
Go ahead: name someone you know who has been negatively affected by violence in media. I'll give you some time to think. Come back next Wednesday if you need to. You won't be able to. Because IT DOESN'T HAPPEN.
