My perspective on this will be a bit skewed, just because of my upbringing. I was adopted by my grandparents. I was 6, Dad was 68, Mom was 64. Dad was born in 1912, Mom in 1916. While my parents weren't overly strict, I didn't have to call them ma'am or sir and I didn't have to ask permission to get up from the table so I could go pee, but there was a certain level of respect for everyone that was just understood. Of course, they came from a generation of people who literally had nothing and made great things from it. I know that world is long gone but I still expect my children to have some manners and show respect to others. Who knows if they will carry that with them when they embark on their own lives as adults but regardless, I know I tried. F*** all these parents who don't give a damn about their kids. If you don't want to raise them, get fixed.

While i agree aud,I go out of my way to not bother people and to be respectful to people in person.but it's kinda the generation before me that has turned me into an ***hole.I get the "you're a punk a** kid" look all the time driving around in my jeep or hell even in my s-10 i get the look of "f*** you your under the age of thirty." I dress nice too so as to distance myself from the punk a** kid look.I wear a collared shirt, nice clean jeans with no holes, and wear a belt so my pants don't sag down to my knees.

In short I'm tired of older people telling me I'm a punk a** kid because i drive a lifted jeep or i respectively correct an elder about something and then they get all butt hurt about it.
I guess that's the end of my rant but i just can't stand old people generalizing me because I'm young and drive a lifted vehicle.when i ask for something i don't want you to tell me that's the wrong part,or it's not gonna fit.I know my vehicles like the back of my hand and I've done the research to know what's gonna fit and what can be modified to fit.

*edit* this happens especially bad in the automotive world.old car guys think their gods gift to the earth and just piss me off to no end when they have no idea what their talking about and continue to tell me i'm wrong.

I disagree about the previous generation turning you into an ***hole. Judging by your old posts/threads, you seemed to be a natural at it and proud of it..... :chuckle:

"...and a growing body of research, including work done by my colleagues at Michigan, is establishing that exposure to violent media numbs people to the pain of others."
BULLSH*T.
There has NEVER been a single bit of conclusive, straightforward evidence to suggest that exposure to "violent media" has ANY affect on people sociologically or psychologically. Anyone who says otherwise is either selling something or an idiot. Or both.

The only way "violent media" could possibly have those effects is if someone was already broken in a big way. In which case it is NOT the "violent media" that's the problem, it's the person being broken. Normal, healthy people can tell the difference between real life and not real life. Even children can. It's been shown in studies (and unlike mister crap-spewer here, I'm not making s*** up as I go). The idea that a properly functioning human being is somehow being damaged by "exposure to violent media" is an insult to anyone capable of sentient thought.

Everyone reading this post, ask yourself right now: "Am I so stupid and psychologically vulnerable that exposure to violence in media could actually change who I am?"
If just the asking of that question doesn't have you choking on your own sense of self-respect, you probably DO need to see a shrink. This is why I have such a hard time understanding how the misconception that violence in media is harmful can be so popular and widely believed. None of the people supporting these kinds of claims have been "damaged" by the stuff. How are they immune?

It's all a crock of crap, fed by the seemingly common-sense idea that "that sounds sensible." People never bother to actually think about things. They just hear and repeat. They create supportive anecdotes in their minds, and twist their perspective of reality to suit their ideals. That's not how the world works. People don't become damaged by MEDIA, unless they have far more significant (and more attention-worthy!) pre-existing issues.

Go ahead: name someone you know who has been negatively affected by violence in media. I'll give you some time to think. Come back next Wednesday if you need to. You won't be able to. Because IT DOESN'T HAPPEN.

I don't believe this either...

But I have to disagree with you when you say that "violent media" doesn't have any effect on someone unless they are broken. Case in point. Greg's youngest son plays warrior / fighting games. He gets VERY wrapped up in them. To the point that when he gets to a stopping point he comes downstairs and acts out what he is doing on the game. Dialog, characters, moves, the whole nine yards. And he gets pumped up, he puts his whole body into it, you can hear the emotion in his voice. Is he broken? Don't think so. But he DOES get wrapped up in the game. It has an impact. There is no denying that.

Edited because I got kind of off-topic.

I'm a gamer. I play a lot of games. And I've never experienced anything like you described. Granted, I'm a notably NON-competitive gamer, but I grew up playing GTA, DOOM, Duke Nukem, Diablo (that one I did play competitively)...even played a lot of Primal Rage (fighting game) as a kid. None of those have had those effects on me.

I generally dislike games that make me angry. If I start getting mad at a game I'll generally turn it off. If the game makes me mad enough it's likely to completely kill my desire to ever play it again. I play games to enjoy myself, and I can't do that if the game is pissing me off. And these rules apply to movies and books, too.

And, anyway, "getting wrapped up in the game" isn't what we're talking about. We're talking about violent media making people numb to other people. Which is a crock of s***.

I agree with MoD, though my gaming is limited to mostly management sims.

Ya I'm pretty natural at it because it comes naturally.I've given people plenty of opportunity's to be nice and not f*** me over and it's always a bad idea.I've learned my lesson about so I'll be a complete ***hole that people hate because it's what a lot of people deserve.Proud of it? eh don't go quite that far,it's what i am and a lot of people are fake douchers so I'm proud to be what i am and who i am openly and not care what people think of me.

If any of you knew me in person I'd give you all the chance to make a first good impression even though i've caught a lot of s*** from people on here which i most likely deserved, but i'd rather be who i am than be some fake piece of crap like i used to be.
