At a Christmas party of one of my wife's friends, I met an older man. His wife and mine know the same person and we got to talking. I mention I'm looking for a cheap truck to mess around with and work on the house. He says he has an 'old truck' lying around he would part with for $500. I said I was simply looking for something to Home Depot and back, and he assures me it would be perfect for it. We exchange numbers, and today I drove up the mountain in my friend's 87 Ram 250. He has 33x12.5 on Power Wagon wheels on it now.

I live on the edge of the suburbs. When I say that, I mean it is a 3 minute drive to a farm, and a 6 minute drive to the one where I buy my produce in the summer. His house was another 30 minutes out. It turns out he lives 1,000 feet up the mountain. The trip included 4 miles of dirt road. We came up on a painted wood sign that read "WHITE KNUCKLE!" and it was followed by a right turn with a drop and then a hair pin that climbed back up. This was the scene when we reached the ridge.

I didn't take any pics of his property out of respect but he had a wonderful setup including an old barn that was completely renovated inside. It had a wood shop and a nice bar.

The truck I went to look at was a 1992 Toyota Truck. This was before the Tacoma name, similar to the Hardbody / Frontier. It turns out he purchased it in 1996. So for the last 20 years it's had one owner, and the guy before that only had it for 4. He decided to replace it with a brand new F250 because he got sick of repairs. He spent the entire time I was there complaining that the F250 was not as good as the Toyota. He parked the Toyota and let the plates expire. It's very hard to sell a car here with expired plates because they have to pass smog before going on the road. I have the time, and for the price I was willing to swap engines if I must. I was so confident I was going to buy it I went to motor vehicles and purchased a temp reg to drive it home. Well, it turns out this is the truck.

It's a 1992 4x4 3.0 V6 5 spd with 157k miles on it. I have a stack of receipts that go back for decades. I have every emissions inspection for the truck since 1996. The timing belt, water pump, were done at the dealer at 120k miles. It has full synthetic everything in it. The tires that are on the truck with less than 5,000 miles on them cost $961. I took the cap and the factory bed liner off and found this.

In the 6 months it sat it started growing moss.

It was filthy. I'm not sure when the last time it got washed before it was parked.

So we broke out the pressure washer and got to work.

It cleaned up really nice. On the drive home... I felt nothing. The front end is tight, the suspension is good, the alignment is straight, the heater works, the clutch is tight, the brakes are wonderful. The only thing I had to do was put a battery in it, clean it, and change a few bulbs. I'm very pleased.

Nice score man! Gotta love the sense of humor the guy has about the hill. Does it ever snow there?

Maybe its just my work computer, but some of the images aren't working.

So when do you find out about the smog? I doubt you'll have issues passing. Only hiccup could be that the EGR could get sticky from setting for that long.

It snows fairly frequently up the Mt. but he's at only 1,000 feet so it's not snow capped. I'm not sure why the images aren't working for you.

I could take it to get smogged whenever. I was thinking about doing to today, but it had a half a tank of old gas in it. With the amount of Methanol in fuel these days it was just garbage. The truck could barely accel with it and would almost feel like it was missing it would hiccup so bad. So I topped it off with another half tank of 92 and I'm going to drive this tank out before I try to smog it. I"m confident it will pass.

Thanks! Truth be told I will probably flip it. I'm already talking to my neighbor across the street about buying this.

I think it's a 78. I can't remember if 76/77 had the square headlights or 78/79. He bought it new. 98k miles, 4x4, 460 engine in it. It had a 5th wheel. He used it to tow a 50 foot camper up and down the mountains when he and his wife traveled. He sold the trailer a few years ago, and it has been sitting ever since. To the people here, these are old worthless trucks. To me, they're gold.

Ok, I'm flipping it. They are going for $4k on Craigslist.

Cleaned the underhood and installed new battery terminals.

Both are great finds. My dad had a very similar Ford truck when I was growing up. It was a three speed on the column and I thought I was the s*** when he taught me how to drive it.

Well I've been meh on the Toyota because it's not amazing on the road. It's low gears are low and the high gears are high. It doesn't help I've been trying to chase a Ram with a built 318. The 31s don't exactly help either. Well today I bought an ATV permit and went off-roading. I'm probably going to keep it now. It was amazing. Went through an inch of snow on the trails in Tilamook State Forest like I was on pavement. I can't wait to get out there with it again.

Taking a cool down at the top of the mountain.

That's one hell of a find man! I never find deals that awesome. I'd never let that thing go anywhere if you got it that cheap. You never find trucks that good for that kind of money.

I picked this up a couple of months back and am currently tearing the top end of the motor down in it. 94 Dodge Ram 4x4 318. It was originally going to be for my father-in-law, but he picked up an Xterra instead and it ended up staying at my house.
