ok i've heard that you need 3 brake lights and i see ppl that have trunks w/ no spoilers (the spoilers has the 3rd break light on it) so technically is it illegal to only have 2 break lights?

No.

Some will argue, and people from CA claim that it's a state law, but to my knowledge, the only law is a Federal law requiring all automakers manufacturing cars after 1985 MUST install a CHMSL (center high-mount stop light).

I haven't had one for years.

Correct. At least in PA.

If it's not there, it's okay.

If you have one that doesn't work or the bulbs are blown, you might as well just take it off, because it won't pass inspection like that.

California vehicle code 24603 - only 2 required brake lights . The 3rd brake light is auxillary, so can be removed.

I've driven w/o a 3rd brake light for, hmmmm, 4 years now in the coupe. Of course, there's about a billion other things for cops to harass me about, 3rd brake lights are the least of my worries.

simple: don't drive home when your a lil tipsy, it's just not worth it.

And the only stories I hear about 3rd brake lights & ppl getting pulled over are usually when the 3rd brake light is present, but not functioning - in which they issue a warning if you didn't do anything else wrong. Otherwise, I haven't ever heard of anyone getting pulled over for not having a 3rd brake light at all... *knock on wood.

probably in cali you would need one, here in south florida the cops could care less. only thing they watch are the donut shops.
