Well my girlfriend said that for my birthday shed buy me something for my car, so I'm thinking about adding a small sub to my system to beef up those lower ranges. I'm not sure whats involved with this though, so I'd like to see if you guys could help me out.

My system so far is a so so JVC head unit (~17 RMS, pretty sure), CDT CL-61a components in the front, and stock, crappy 4 x 6s in the back. I really love the way the CDTs sound, but I would like to even it out with just a LITTLE more thump on those hip hop songs, know what I mean?

I dont want a big heavy system in the back, so do you think like 1 8" or 10" sub in a small box would be enough to add what I want? Also, I imagine I'll need an amp to run the sub, so what should I look into as far as that? Just an amp to run the sub or should I go a little farther and amp the components also?

Sorry I'm still kinda a newb to all of this, so any advice would be helpful.

Thanks guys!

You don't really need an amp for the components, remember, the amplifier is the most expensive item in your system, and you'll definitely need one for the sub. The head unit should be enough to push the fronts and stock rears pretty loud without distortion, so go for an amp for the sub instead.

Definitely go for the 10" over the 8", you don't really lose much punch and you gain lots of deep bass. I'd say go for an Infinity Perfect, but only because I'm a little biased (I have a 12" Perfect in my 240.)

As for wattage, you wanna match as closely as you can the RMS of both the sub and the amp, but if you can't, go higher with the amp. Subs usually get blown with not enough power, and hardly ever with too much power.

That'll get you started at least. :)

for a small footprint and easy to install sub..i would go with an Infinity BASSLINK..they can be had pretty cheap and they are powered already, so pretty much just plug/play.

here is a link on ebay...http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISA...=3291

you can also listen to these at Circuit city if you want to make sure its enough bass for you.

fiznat, your girlfriend found the way to a man's heart; his car. Bravo. Also... the Basslink is really good. I used to sell them and install them. They integrate very easily to about anything. I would definitely get one of those over something like a bazooka type product. Also, powering the components and 4x6's in your car with your headunit is okay for now if all you really want is a fuller sound. I would recommend turning the bass on the headunit down and using the Basslink's onboard bass eq to boost up the bass in the system. That would take the stress off of your highs/mids allowing them to play louder while boosting the Basslink's bass up to where it should be.

I agree w/ I30t. Go to circuit city or tweeter and listen to good set of components unamplified, and then listen to it amplified and see how little you're getting out of your $300+ set of components w/o an amp.

If it is a choice between adding a sub to your current setup and adding an amp to your CDT's, FOR GOD SAKES GET THE AMP!! You will love what those things will be able to do with some juice behind them.

May I suggest an amp? This amp is truely high end for a great price.http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISA...18796

dude, i've been in a car with CDT's man. and let me tell ya...they have so much mid-bass i don't even think you'll want a sub. IMHO i think CDT's are way better than Focals, considering their price and performance. so if possible beg and pled for an amp instead man...i guarantee that you won't regret it!

yeaaah you know what, I think I'm gonna pick myself up a nice 4 or 5 channel (?) amp and hook that up to the CDTs.. that way if I ever want a sub I can just tack it on to that, but I'll just see how they sound with just the amp after that.

The CDTs ARE real nice, they sound amazing actually, and I didnt spend $300 on em either. Got em for $160 or so from thezeb.com - they were painted the wrong color or something so CDT got rid of em for cheap. They're CDT CL-61s basically.

Ill try out the amp and let ya guys know though- thanks so much for your help!

what are some good 4 channel amps that you would recommend for the cdt components? i'm getting a 4 channel b/c i might bridge 2 of the channels for a sub in the future and have the remaining 2 channels for the components.

it's 50W RMS x 2 @ 4ohm, and that's almost guaranteed to be underated... ARC audio makes some nice amps and this is pretty cheap at the moment
