Well, I think it is time for me to move on in my quest on this Q... The compound of things....

I get about 12mpg, dont drive the car extremely hard, runs REALLY strong, everything that affects it is new or in decent condition... The vacuum leak has nothing to do with it..... Not to mention my minor sludge problem....

What sucks is the money ive put into it!

All these little things makes me wanna get rid of it... Would I be stupid to do this???

But the money you get from it, wont buy a 97 which also may need a lot of help to begin with.

tough call wes!!! are you going to college???? if most of your cash will be tied up in other area's, the Q is a gonna be hard. on the other hand, you've already spent $$$$ on her, which you might never recoup in a sale. in my opinion, might be the wrong time to bail now!!! why only 12mpg??? did the KS's help with the mileage??? how about the O2 sensors, were they changed??? there's got to be a reason. with my old KS's and O2 sensors i get 15-17, hopefully it will improve with the plenum job.

i wouldn't sell it either, at least not if it was a 97q that you were looking to move into. if it was something like comparing apples to oranges, like say you were thinking of a miata, or an suv, then i think you could make a reasonable argument against your car, but as it is, i'm not so sure. i went from a 92 to a 99 back to a 93 and couldn't be happier.

Thats the thing, most of these problems have me completely stumped.. This car has some of the weirdest problems!!

College isnt gonna be a problem, my parents will take care of that for the most part...

I dont know why im only getting 12mph.. Ive done all the right stuff and it seems whenever i do something it makes gas mileage worse....

My o2s havent been changed, but i checked them via the OBD, and they pass with flying colors....

KS didnt make any difference..... IF anything it might have made it worse...

I remember in the summer time I regularly saw 15mpg with the AC on all the time, then I started replacing things and it got worse..... EVERY THING I DO ON THIS FUGGIN CAR MAKES GAS MILEAGE WORSE!!!!!

That would make more sense than a switch to a 97.

Wes I dont know what state your in but if it is using a winter blend for the fuel then you would possibly see a drcrease in MPG, not to mention that the cars run a tad richer in the cold weather, in other words keep it:D

Wes, don't sell.

You have put too much blood, sweat, & tears into the car.

Depending on how much you drive, a $300 bill from the local Infiniti dealership might not be a bad investment, if it can improve your fuel mileage.

I know 15 MPG would kill me, in gas costs.

((1000 miles per week/ 15 MPG) * $1.67) = $111.33 per week in fuel. - OUCH!

Try driving a full tank, and keep the RPM under 2500, and your time in traffic at a minimum (road trip).

After you fix the vacume leak.

Sorry Jeff, under 2500 in the city (how almost all of my miles occur) isnt possible..... :D You cant have all that power and not use it!! :)

I drive about 200 miles a week, while it isnt killing me, I dont see how it runs so good yet it gets such bad mileage...... Gas tank never gets below 1/4 tank, most times filling at half....

I will make another post about my fuel mileage sometime....... I was REALLY hoping the KS to make a 3ish mpg increase... didnt change a thing....

I am going on a road trip this weekend, I will find out what sort of highway mileage i am getting... I have a can of BG44k ready to go in the tank! WOOHOO...

Wes,

I remember you said that your car is missing two screws on one of the coil pack. I would try to replace those two screws to see if you getting better mpg.

At 12 mpg with $1.7 per gallon, it costs you ~$10 to cruise around for an hour.

BTW, I am getting 17-19 mpg on my Q

VA- I dont think that is the problem, as the car runs smooth as glass and is really powerful.... Something like that wouldnt just cause bad gas mileage.....

Plus, I still have my EGR problem... I was reminded about this with the CEL.... :(

Wes, in my experience, you're in that tweener stage, torn between the car you own that's killing you, frustrated with throwing money at it & wondering if it's ever going to get better, 1/2 way wanting to sell it & buy a Civic so you can have a life again, but at the same time knowing you're so close to getting it up to par you just want it done, yet with all the troubles, you still smile as you approach it & smoothly, swiftly drive away in something that's not at all like every other jellybean.

It's a Wes decision, tough call at your age with school coming up & all. Time will be at a premium, needless to mention the parts. Even a few year newer one will have gremlins & maintenance, too.

Sorry, but I'm going to be frank here. I think my advanced years and my ownership of more cars than I choose to remember permits me to be though.

Cut bait and get another car which you are confident won't continue to drain your resources.

You've crossed the line and become too attached to a car which is your daily transportation. Please remember these automobiles are, at this stage of their life, just 'used cars'. As such, it will do nothing but continue to depreciate. No amount of money is going to stop that.

If this was your second, third or more car and it had almost no miles on it, than it may be different. Whether these cars ever become 'collectable' or 'important' could be cause for a lengthy post at another time - but I'm afraid my opinion would be cause for alarm for most of you.

Sorry if I offend but its been a long day and .......

Hey Wes, we don't drive Qs to get good gas mileage, do we. I'd understand that if you found that the car had a problem that was going to cost you a couple of grand to fix, then I'd unload it on some sucker, but if all you have is that it waste too much gas, that's not reason enough to get rid of it. If MPG is your issue, then get a Civic, but if your like me, all I ever see myself driving is a big, powerful, rear drive, V8 sedan, no matter how much you waste on gas. As much work as you've done on that car and after the plenum work, I'd get married to the car. Maybe when you get a couple of grand saved, get yourself a practical car, like a Sentra SE-R as a second car. I test drove one many years ago, and it was a fun car to drive. You could look for one in stick and get some NICO tips from the Sentra owners. Don't fret too much on MPGs. I haven't calculated MPGs lately on mine, but I get about 200 miles of city driving from 1 tank of gas in my Q.

Well, I hate to say it, but a $55K luxury car still costs as much or more to maintain used as it did when new. The original owner paid then, or the subsequent owners are paying even more now.

If you don't have a good job with disposable income or are not a trust fund baby, it's tough to maintain these cars as they should be. If you find it doesn't make sense to keep it, at least you have the memories. There are more important things like education and learning than owning coveted objects, especially when one is young.

I want you to buy a 1988 Nissan Sentra. They run forever. Additionally, they run forever.

I wrecked mine three times. Pieces were literally falling in the street. IT KEPT GOING!Insurance finally settled, and came and took it away and handed me a check.

My Q is currently sitting parked in front of the house. Is it too expensive to own? Not at all! I have a good job at a small software company, and my school and all expenses are paid for, so its all disposable income. Unfortunately, I have no time!

So I beat on the minivan.11 years old, 52k, and running strong! Probably this summer I'll get caught up on the Q, and do enough maintenance to enjoy it until the following summer.

You would have been wiser to sell it before you put $ into it. There is a fine line where you decide to dump money into it to get it fixed or sell it and let the next guy worry about it. I think you crossed that line.

There is no shame in wanting to keep a car, regardless of mileage, state, etc. I love my Q and never want to get rid of it. Wes, you know you love your car. And you know that you can get it running in tip-top shape. Here's what you do:

You fork over the time and the $400-500 necessary for the dealer to do a full diagnostic on the car. Get your grocery list and come back here and we'll work out what needs to be done, etc.

I know you are a DIYer and a very good one, but sometimes nothing but a trip to the Infiniti store will do.

When in High School, I had a 71 Monte Carlo SS454, one of 1,919 produced. Single digit gas mileage, when it wasn't broken for one reason or another. I used to keep an armament of starter solenoids & rocker arms in the trunk for roadside repairs, which were frequent.

I practically killed myself with the upkeep & missed out on a lot of fun stuff I should have been doing at my age as a result. I hardly ever went out partying or cruising because of the gas mileage.

After a couple years of it, I think my parents felt sorry for me & picked up a VW Dasher Diesel as a third car.

For possibly less than the cost of your next upcoming repair on the Q, you might could pick up a B12 or B13 Sentra, S13 240SX or the like as a driver & keep the Q as your project. But, projects, by nature, don't have much place in your life until you're out of college but before you get married & have kids. Trust me, I know.

If I weren't able to do the work myself on the Q, I probably wouldn't own it at all. There is a price to pay to be different, particularly with old luxury/sport cars.

Well... As some have said, im basically screwed into keeping it, I guess...

To be honest, I havent really spent THAT much... I mean youd think with all the work ive done, id dropped at least 3k... Just a TOUCH over 1200 AFTER plenum....! I think I could probably get 6500 and break even... but then Id have to find another one and follow suit.......

Just so you know, im not selling it because of the vacuum leak or gas mileage individually.... Its the compound of things... It is very weird, the car doesnt want to run in cold weather... It starts, but hardly runs at all... Cant be good!! I gotta let it warm up for a couple minutes...

The only problem is, I WONT degrade what kind of car I have... Im not gonna go from a Q to like a sentra... The Q is reliable enough, minus its problems and short comings....

I think the best thing for me to do is keep this engine running at minimum wage, and then when I can drop a new engine and transmission... I am confident I could do the work myself, maybe not the actual swap, but all the other stuff involved.... I could probably get my hands on a good used engine for $1500, r/r $900 in parts (labor is free) and then another $1000 for the installation (assuming I cant DIY that).... 3000 wont get me a car anywhere NEAR that....

But for now, the powertrain will be golden for a while with about $300 more.... transmission cooler, new transmission filter and M1, and the envirolution flush.....

For all of you reading this, DO NOT MAKE THE SAME MISTAKES I MADE... I OBVIOUSLY HAVE AN ABUSED Q45!!! HEED THE ADVICE OF THIS BOARD!

I let mine warm up until the needle is at 3 o'clock everytime, but it runs fine (never colder than 20° F).

To your credit, you are learning. Better the devil you know than the one you do not. There is always a take out engine in the future, but I bet yours will be fine for another 100K if maintained.__________________Brian1995 Q45 & Q45t & 2000 Q45
