are the automatic and manual transmission driveshafts really different? I was sourcing some swap parts today and a couple junkyards told me that they showed the 5spd and auto shafts as interchangable....

Anyone know for SURE?

no they are not, when you are doing a 5 speed swap you only need the front half of the manual driveshaft. the other half can just stay bolted to the diff

i kno this cuz my 5 speed swap is almost done

Yes, but its a horrendous PITA to get the front half of the driveshaft unbolted. Might as well replace the whole thing and not worry about it.

?

it wasnt hard at all to pull the front half of the driveshaft off... I'd say that was actually one of the easier steps to pulling the motor.. Just those 4 little bolts right after the universal joint, the U that holds it in (2 bolts), and it slides right out....

Good to know though guys, thanks!

BTW does it matter ABS vs. non-ABS? how about 89-90 driveshafts vs. 91-93 driveshafts?

ABS's driveshafts are different, but I've forgotten how. I would say shorter but Andrave is having a problem where it's actually too long so who knows.

89-93 manual drivshafts should all be the same, outside of the HICAS models, seeing as they have the same transmission and differential.

don't want to revive this from the dead but I thought if someone used search to turn this up, it might be worthwhile to note that my tranmission had been dented and that was causing my problems. I managed to dent the rear of it out end to accept the driveshaft all the way. The problem was all me, none nissan.

shorter on the back section. The diff carrier is an inch longer than the non ABS carriers due to an extra sensor on the front of it.

It's generally easiest to just change the whole shaft because they are balanced as a total unit, not individually.
