OK I know that I have brought this up before guys, but I keep on getting conflicting answers and I just thought I would ask one more time. OK symptoms. In 90 degree heat, the fan blows hot air. In 32 degree weather (what it is now in Oklahoma) it blows cold air. I have had the compressor check, it works, I even still have a ton of the old R12 left. Diplay goes in and out. Fan works at all speeds. AMB temp reads accurately. I was told, by a dealership, that if I replace the temperature control head unit, it would fix all of my problems because it is the head unit that controls the opening and closing of doors. AZ price from Joe $500, not bad. Everywhere else $1200. I was also to to run the systems test on it by holding the off button and then turning the car to "on". I tried everything including upping the amb temp by 6 Degrees. I have checked all fuses. Was also told that heater cores rarely go out. I am not sure what else to do. i even had someone suggest to unplug the battery and reconnect it again to "reset" the settings in the car and maybe the heat door would open. Help!

Did you search under this topic. I seem to remember that other people had problems with their controls and one person figured out exactly where the problems were. All it took was a little soldering.

For the life of me I cannot remember who did it but maybe someone else will chime in. Even if you took it apart yourself (see http://www.carstereohelp.com/ for instructions on removal) then followed the instructions from the old posts. You could do it yourself or even pay a electronics shop $50 to resolder

PLease guys, help him out. Lead him in the right direction.

Another issue may be the air mix door (buried deep inside the dash). Sometimes it breaks. More common problem on 94-96 models, but it can happen to earlier Qs too. (Very expensive fix, lots of labor, cheap part).

Maybe Q45tech can elaborate??

My understanding on control unit is that if the digital display burns out, the buttons will still work. So you could turn the unit off, push ECON, hit the hot button repeatedly (tops out at 85 degrees), and then hit the cold button 10 times to get down to 75 degrees.

Maybe the dealer's right that the whole unit is bad.... you can order the part and install it yourself. Not too difficult. But I'm just afraid that might not be the problem....

Sorry to confuse you more! (Better than wasting money, though).

Thanks guys. I really do appreciate it. My friend just bought a new Mountaineer. The SUV is a dream. Fully loaded. I was walking around the showroom and the salesman showed me a Lincoln LS. It was a nice little care with a huge V8! I was rather impressed. I have seriously considered getting a new car and going with the car payments vs having to worry about the rear diff, the heater or the lack there of, the sunroof which allows a small amount of water to some through the 2 map lights at the top, (safety issue), the abs actuator, and of course the climate control display. I hope that when I go to sleep tonight, I dream f my Q, but after what i saw today, with an excellent warranty.....I dunno. Sounds like I am giving up on the old Q and I would miss it very much, but things like heat, a worry free driving experience and a dealer to back me up sounds too tempting to let go. Anyone want it?

2002 Lincoln LS Luxury SedanPremium 4dr Sedan (3.9L 8cyl 5A)

TRUE COST TO OWN from Edmundshttp://www.edmunds.com/new/200...intro

Year 1 Year 2 Year 3 Year 4 Year 5............................ 5-yr Total Depreciation $11,614 $3,810 $3,354 $2,974 $2,668 ......$24,420 Financing $2,440 $1,973 $1,468 $923 $336................... $7,140 Insurance $1,245 $1,264 $1,283 $1,302 $1,322............ $6,416 Taxes & Fees $2,695 $336 $290 $250 $215................... $3,786 Fuel $1,094 $1,127 $1,161 $1,196 $1,232......................$5,810 Maintenance $0 $0 $505 $1,165 $1,747......................... $3,417 Repairs $0 $0 $0 $189 $454 ............................................$643 Yearly Totals $19,088 $8,510 $8,061 $7,999 $7,974..... $51,632

Approximate Cost per Mile: $0.69(based on 15,000 miles per year).

The 28% 1st year depreciation is always the problem in a new car as is the 53-55% 3 year.I would guess the financing calcs are high with all the deals available?Pretty hard to spend $6,000 per year on repairs and maintenance on a 91Q every year for 5 years. Why not buy a used 98 Lexus LS400 for less than $30,000.........the depreciation will be $9-10,000 LESS over 5 years.

Dennis made a good point. With all the money you save by keeping the Q ( more comfortable more powerful car) you can get everything fixed and have thousands left over.

I think its capacity was just bumped it to 4.2L, so with a 5 speed automatic it might hang with a Q up to 70-80 mph. Nice suspension (unequal length A arms all around), vented rear discs, and a stiff chassis. Can't compare the interiors for quality, though, or space.

For a real hoot, ask about the McLaren version with supercharging. If it's going to depreciate so much, it might as well be extra quick!

All I know is I've spent around $21,600 in the maint & repairs over the last 5.3 years that about $4,075 per year in 138,000 miles - that beats the $39,500 [LS/Lincoln] non comparable operating costs by almost $18,000 and my measely $6,000 deprec still saved me $12,000.

It almost never makes sense to buy a new car unless you really downsize dramatically [Honda Civic, Accord, etc or get a throw away Korean model.

You have to save the savings to have the downpayment when you ultimately decide your old car is toast after 15-20 years
