Greetings, J30s!After bring my J30t to several auto monkeys for an a/c 'squealing noise,' I found an honest mechanic who simply replaced the bearing in the small pulley just under the a/c compressor. The three other lied and told me I needed an entire a/c compressor. That guy proved them all wrong, but one thing: when I got it back form him and parked it over night, there developed an oil leak that my car never had. It was coming from the rear main seal as he told me when I brought it back to him a week later. Now he wants $350.00 in labor plus whatever the seal costs.I don't want to say that he 'rigged' my car to leak oil. I am saying that it didn't have the leak UNTIL after he worked on it. My driveway where I park my J30t could have been a dinner table, if you get my drift.* I saw a TV spot about this 'mighty putty' that seals leaks on 'just about any suffice, so I ordered some tonight, thinking that I could jam this space-age putty into the area where the oil leaks out and stop the leak.Any body have any thoughts? Do you think this will work and save me $325.00?It will take 2 to 4 weeks to get this putty, and two tanks of gas after an oil change: the dip stick still shows full, although the driveway does show blackened spots.Feedback is always welcomed.ThanksJasonsos

Use only Auto-rx. It will help with the main seal. If I were you, I will not use anything else because most of the "stop leak" additivies just block/sweal the seal. No good at all.

350$ sounds very fair (actually cheap) to do the rear main, it is a crutial part in the engine, and requires removing the transmission and drive shaft to get to it and replace it, it takes 5 minutes once the transmission is off, but it seems like he is charging you the labour for removing the transmission (which i think is fair)

the rear main seal wears out after a period of time, when it fails, it is totally random.....(except adding too much oil when changing the engine oil, and even that has to be done 10s of times for it to cause the rear main seal to fail)

i would also flush the transmission fluid since it is going to be taken out

and finally, i doubt that your mechanic had anything to do with it, unless he had some work done on the transmission

i hope this helps, please update

Nissan used VITON rear and front mains [ on J30/Q45] which will not swell with chemicals so when they leak every 100k they need replacing.

I had several quotes when I hadd mine replaced, $750ish was the high side. I paid right at $350 parts and labor, so I'd say that's a fair labor price.

Thank you for your input! I, too, do not know what I would do if it weren't for you guys here, keeping this website going.* I value your input, and no, he did not have any need to check the transmission for any reason at that time. I just found it off that it never had one small spot of an oil leak until AFTER I got the car back from him. Actually, it was over night and the next morning that I saw the oil leak in the clean driveway. I don't want to think him dishonest, since he saved me from two cut throats, and yes, I think the $350.00 is pretty fair. He did say that he would have to drop the transmission plus whatever the seal costs. I like the man, too. * I just had hoped that this 'mighty putty' would patch up the leak and hold up for about 6 months until after my major operation that is coming up.Thanks again for your post!Jasonsos

Hey Yoda.Yes, I am certain that he would. His address is:Bill Welborn Auto Repair301 E. College St.Alvarado, TX 76009PH. 817-790-6621

Give him a call. I'm sure he would do the job for you by UPS. Why not?Even the a/c compressor repair guy claimed that the compressor HAD to be rebuilt until I had Bill look at my J30. He knew right off that it was that small pulley bearing after I had told him of the other grease monkeys who had d!ck around changing the compressor pulley and bearing to no avail. Tell him "Jason" sent you from Cleburne, TX--then duck! 'Just kidding. He and I are on good terms. Thanks for your post!Jasonsos

Oh great. Now it is over 2 weeks since he added that $30.00 additive that I could not find at O'Reilys or AutoZone. Neither one had ever heard of it. I kept the empty bottle, but don't have it in front of me. Bill said that he had gotten it from the 'tool salesman,' and that it wasn't available to consumers. You're certain about 'no additives' in J30s?Thanks for your post. I' will hope that that 'mighty putty' works, as I ordered it last night. I mean, if it will hold off 'pressured water leaks,' then . . .???Thank you for your post.Jasonsos

You may want to look into Epoxygator pastes for this problem. The main thing is surface prep. Good luck to you.
