preface: i have been using the m1-208 exclusively on both g50s for almost 50k mi. i also perform regular UOAs, and the worst insolubles i've had was a 0.3% on a 7100 mile run of 0w40 (blackstone flags 0.6% as being the threshold of 'bad'). and, anyone who knows me knows that there is no way i would ever knowingly let an oil filter get clogged. unfortunately, our friends at IoS no longer stock the M1filters [they also used to sell them at a very reasonable $6.50]. So, the part is not discontinued, and i'm tempted to not mess with success and just fork over the $11/ea or so not counting when advance has a 30% off coupon or something.
However, always being on a quest for something 'better' i've been poking around at other options and there are a few: the wix 51361 and pureone L24457 are direct replacements, including that there is NO bypass valve (like the m1-208). The stated flow rating for the 51361 is 7-9 gpm. However, there is at least one option with taller media and the same 3/4-16 thread, it also comes with a bypass valve set at 8-11 psid.
Question 0: how much does a stock vh45de oil pump displace at say 3000 rpm? 6000? is it likely the same due to pump 'relief' valve opening?

Question 1: (i suppose only Brian, qship96, and Daedalus have a 15208-60u00)--does the factory filter also have NO bypass?

Question 2: assuming yes (NO bypass) on the -60u00, then we presume the vh45 designers wished to have always filtered oil, possibly at the expense of pressure. note however, that the vh41 -9e000 filter DOES have an 8-11 psid bypass. So, debate: better to have a fail-safe bypass in the unlikely event that the media clogs--delivering un filtered oil to engine, or better to lose oil pressure and get the idiot lite warning of imminent danger?

I cut open my last M1-208 and found no bypass valve of which you speak of. I called Purolator and they said their filters (made for the G50) have no bypass valve as well. They rely on the oil pumps built in bypass valve.

Correct, the bypass valve is built into the engine on the g50. I have used the 15208-60u00 {still have 3 in storage} along with the M1, pure one, and Amsoil EAO. Out of the 4 of these, I prefer the Pure One over the rest, as it has the finest filteration {99.8 efficient} and is easy to locate, and AAP occasionally has them for only $4-5 if you catch a deal, but even disregarding price, it is my favorite.

cool that you cut'em up. I know that none of the m1-208/51361/PL24457 have a bypass. i also know that there is an oil-pump relief valve--but that was not the point. My original thought was if a filter on a g50 has no bypass valve, and it stops flowing--NO oil will get to the engine. the pump relief valve will engage and keep dumping oil back to the pan. But, then you two got me thinking and i verified fsm LC-05, and now see that there are TWO valves, one for pressure regulation and one for differential pressure filter bypass.

qship- i assume you are using the PL24457? PL20195 has the larger media (and bypass valve).

fsm for fgy33 shows no bypass in the oil filter adapter plate---another difference between the two engines (thread size on filter also different, presumably to keep from interchanging between g50/fgy33).

IoS no longer has M1?

Jay, email me if you need a bridge filter.

Yes, I am using the pure one #24457, excellent filtration. I never saw the need to experiment with a larger filter that will fit than what was specced for the engine as I change oil/filter quarterly- which is 5000-7000 miles for me.

I have a few special original equipment 60u00 filters for sale at only $99 for those who want to win pebble beach car shows and need to win points for originality........first come first served!!!
