so in my countless hours of browsing craigslist for no reason I stumbled on someone parting out their project car. One of the biggest things he has up is an RB25 and he only wants $750 for it. Thing is it's just the motor, no harness, ecu, or transmission. It has 45,000 and came out of an R33 if I remember correctly, it runs just fine, the seller just has no time to finish it.

I can afford to buy the motor right now but don't see being able to afford to put it in until probably this time next year since I just dropped money on a 5spd swap for my KA, and am hoping to buy paint in the next few weeks so I can get my s13 painted before winter.

Do you think it's worth it for me to buy the motor? or should I just let it pass and spend the money on coilovers or put it towards a possible KA-T? I've always wanted to RB swap but I need to know if you think it's a deal or not.

I vote pass it up. You'll still be missing a ton of things, just save yourself the hassle and buy a complete swap

I'm going to try to haggle a down a little bit more if I decide to go for it. Hey says he bought it for $1200 so who knows. So far I've found RB25 trannys go for about $750 average so that will cost me as much as the motor, plus clutch kit, and trying to track down, buy, and mod a harness/ecu, will I really be saving much money compared to buying a motorset with all that included from the start?

This is kind of a stupid question but I'm a complete rookie when it comes to major wiring, but would it be possible to send my original harness(SOHC KA) to someone and have them modify it and add the missing wiring so the RB can be wired up, or do you need the engine harness in order to splice to two together? I'm not too worried about the transmission stuff, but I've been having a hell of a time finding an RB wiring harness separate from a motor.

it's too much work involve in converting the ka's harness for the rb; because there are plugs for the ecu that are missing,; even pinning alone will not be worth it for them to take your order. just source an rb harness; don't make life difficult for you.

if you are a noob w/ rb, then put out more money and get a motorset, otherwise your swap will never be completed due to many components missing from a bare motor..

I think you're right BoostFab, I'm just going to spend all my money on suspension and LSD this winter I think, that will give me more time to decide whether I want to go RB25 and get a motorset and McKinney mounts or KA-T.

Smart move.

Realistically buying a cheap bare motor does nothing more then open the gates of expenditure hel(l).
