are you guys checking the torque on the head studs after driving for a few km? If so what distance do you recommend etc

Unless my FSM is wrong they are not SR head studs, the SR's head bolts are larger. Consequently if they are an SR part it may be main studs. I will be using RB26 head bolts on my build but it requires a great deal of modification to do so.

The CA headstud kit is a rebadged SR mainstud kit.

Yup, pulsar bolts will work just fine, but I think you might find that the price difference between them and the ARP's aren't that great.

OLD thread, but hey, I searched.

I'm stuck with ARP head studs that won't thread into my block right now. Very frustrating. I have part # 202-4702. They don't even get one turn in before they stop.

I called ARP just now and spoke with Sam, who informed me that the SR20 main studs they make (part # 202-5402) are the SAME thread pitch and diameter as the CA18 head studs they make (part # 202-4702). The ONLY difference is that one of them is undercut and the other isn't, which all that means is the unthreaded portion of the stud is slightly different diameter -- which shouldn't have any bearing on whether it would work or not.

I assume my CA18DET is a JDM motor because it has butterfly valves and 8 port head.

I'm sending them my current head studs and hopefully this issue will get resolved. ANY INSIGHT WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED!! Thanks guys :mike

Yes, that's a J-spec head.

For fun, lay an ARP stud and a head bolt side by side (facing opposite directions) so that their threads should theoretically line up, and see if they appear to be off to any amount.

it doesn't matter if you have a JDM or EDM motor.... the stock head bolts are the same, and therefore the thread pitch for the bolt holes in the block are the same!

it's either the same kind of screw up as in the past where supposed "CA head stud" kits were duds and just didn't work at all... or it was an oops on their part and they mispackaged that box you so (un)luckily bought! regardless, it's likely they screwed up and it's not you :)

it's so screwy talking about being screwed by wrong screws :chuckle:

Non-beleiver! JDM bolts are made of unobtainium.

Haha well I think that assuming that I did something really stupid like that is the best way to approach it, because typically I DO something really stupid like that!

But unfortunately not this time... I mailed the incorrect studs back to ARP yesterday before taking my head to the shop to get new valve stem seals installed and the valves worked. Hoping to get a call from ARP soon to tell me a set of SR20 main studs are on their way. I'll keep you guys posted!

Unless there has been a change in the info that I had, back when the CA headstud kits first came out, none of them worked on USDM/JDM engines. It was discovered that the UDM market CA's had a different thread for some reason, and so 2 different sets of CA head studs were created. One for 8 port heads, and one for 4 port heads. It's possible that you got one of the UK kits by mistake.

If this info is no longer correctly, please post up so we all know what's going on and I'll update the FAQ

that doesn't make sense... according to FAST, the head bolt part numbers are the same for USDM, JDM, and EDM (which includes UK cars), which means the threads are all the same

Talked to ARP today, they received my studs that I returned (202-4702) and said that they were mis-packaged. They're sending me the correct ones now.

You're welcome. Makes me wonder if this mis-packaging problem was something "upstream" that caused several of them to be erroneous rather than just mine.

Hope this helps sort through the mess, even if it's someone googling this like I did 5 years from now.

No,but I will now. Based on the thread it looked like it was a highly guarded secret LOL. It seemed like Dee was PM/Emailing people so I just followed suit.
