Im installing HKS cams tonight and im wondering what i should do with my butterfly valves, i read in a thread or two that leaving them open was the best idea but i wanna do this once and i wanna do it right while i have the chance to work on my car, and also im having the ECU tuned right after they are dropped in.the car is only used for drifting and some daily drivingthe cams specs are 256in 256ex 8.8mm liftif leaving them open is best then what is the best way to make them stay open?

thanks for all the help in advanceDerek

If you have all the components (surge tank, solenoids, check valves, etc) I would keep the butterflys, if not...delete them.

you know what im gonna say regarding this... for any kind of high-rpm racing, the best butterfly valves are NO butterfly valves.

Ok i left them unconnected and the cams feel great!, gain some low end and flowed more up top, well thats what im reading from the required fuel map. bit more ecu tuning and i'll be all set.

take them out, they are doing nothing but restricting airflow when you just have them disconnected like that.

I would just remove them but im not about to pull the intake mani apart just yet (im lucky i had the time to install the cams and tune). what would i plug the holes with if i removed them while still on the motor?my other CA engine build that im in the middle of doing has already been removed and about to be welded closed.

new cams....... new problem.. im not sure if its the cams that made my valve seals leak or if the hard driving/tuning with low oil killed my turbo. But i sure em smoking....ALOT and its oil. (didnt start smoking till i topped off my oil)starts smoking about 30sec after start up.the turbo does have shaft play more then it was "new" and more then just oil clearance,id guess around 4-5mm. so im gonna pull the plugs and check em out. i really hope its my turbo because i just picked up a HKS GT28RS. any easy tests? i dont have much time and barly any money.thanks

i thought valve seals were associated with smoke at idle?

I heard you can simply plug up the return for the oil, and pump oil into the inlet. If it leaks from either side of the turbo, you know your seals are bad. ditto for the water inlet/outlet.

Also to make sure your turbo spins freely, you can hook it up to a vacuum...(check link, back round music is hotttt)

Too much oil perhaps? If you put too much oil in your engine, you're going to smoke. As for your butterfly valves, and as one suggested, leave them alone. No vacuum and you should be just fine. Or you can always take the advice given and just take them out.

Thats what I was thinking, if you have a ball bearing turbo and do not have the oil restrictor then its probably forcing oil through the seals and burining it. BB turbos require less oil.

ok so i un bolted the exhaust manifold and pulled it away from the engine and started it up and no smoke from the engine (THANK GOD) so i was 99% sure it was the turbo and went ahead and removed it and sure enough it was leaking oil on the exhaust side like no tomorrow.so now im installing a t28bb i take this as good news

glad to hear it was only the turbo. Happened to me with my stocker. I was so pissed when it started smoking until i found out it was the turbo. Then i got happy because i new i was going to go with something a little bigger. LOL
