If 8 people admitted to this, then how many more are there?...I have to stand up for some of what's called "inflated shipping". Yes some people do inflate their shipping to make a profit, but if it bothers a bidder then he or she just shouldn't bid on that item. You can ALWAYS find out up front how much shipping is before you bid. I can't tell you how many times I've seen someone given negative feedback AFTER shipping an item simply because their shipping was too high.
I've run a business previously on eBay, and now I help others expand their businesses to eBay. A lot of what is considered "inflated shipping" is actually shipping which includes packing materials. For an online small business, packing materials can get expensive- especially when you ship large items. For example: shipping a computer. UPS recommends you double-box it and fill it with peanuts. At my local box store, a computer (tower) sized box costs $5.00, you need one of these and then a bigger box to go outside of it which is roughly $6.00. then $1.35 for a bag of peanuts, you need to keep a supply of tape, and then the cost of shipping one of those is at least $20+ depending on where it's going and the weight.
Even if you can get a nice arrangement with a shipping company for a nice price, it won't be THAT nice. UPS offers only $2.00 off counter charge for businesses. I have paid $5.00 for shipping for an item that arrived in my mailbox with a 37 cent stamp attached to it. I wasn't too happy about that because it made me feel like a complete idiot, but sometimes though it may seem like gouged or inflated shipping, it may not always be the case.
