The tires on my 2006 Nissan Fuga were wearing out on the inside, so I took it to get re-aligned after I got some new tires. The people there said I needed to get a few parts replaced - the steering end and the rack end.

I have no idea what these things are and I will have to order them online since I have a JDM and I don't live in Japan. I've been unable to find them doing searches since I guess these may be just the mechanic's colloquial term for them and not necessarily the official terms.

A worn tie rod end and upper/lower control arms would potentially cause that as would worn shock/strut. if the rubber boots for those components are worn and the shock/strut assembly is worn, there's a good chance an alignment is not going to do yu any good and those partsd should be replaced.

Google the terms to understand the parts involved. Maybe start with this... http://auto.howstuffworks.com/car-suspension1.htm

Double E,

What you say is most likely one or more of his issues. But when the poster states "someone" said the steering end and rack is bad, the first thing that comes to mind is, I doubt it. I think your advice to learn about how a steering system works is right on. It really gets to me when people don't know the basics of how anything operates in a car, except for their music system and cell phones. No insult to the poster intended. When anyone states something is wrong with any of my cares my first reaction is show me what is wrong and tell me why you think your solution to the problem is the solution. I have had at least 50% of my cars misdiagnoised by someone who is just stupid or trying to rack the bill up.

I feel sorry for this guy. He knows nothing about the mechanics of a car. I agree with you, he needs an education. Dealers and whoever can see these suckers coming in a mile away. In my OP this is another one getting scammed. What a shame!

To diamatik...I don't want to be rude or insulting, but Double E is trying to steer you down the right road. When someone tells you this or that is wrong, question, question and them make them show you!

Best of luck to you on getting your car fixed

Spot ON, myother!

I love this site and I read ALL the posts for one simple reason - I do NOT know enough about the workings of a car. EG: I had no clue what the little box was on my air tube until I read a post about MAF's. I researched and read about what it's purpose is, how, when, to clean / replace it, etc. This site and especially those in here who DO know about cars have been a bloody priceless education for me. I have always been interested in working on my own cars, but was never exposed to the knowledge I've gained by being on this site.
I am much more confident about myself around my car now. But this site has also helped me to know my limits and determine if it's something I can do, or if it would be better to drop it at the dealer or my mechanic. And even then I would read up on why the service was needed, and what I should expect after its done properly.

I was a bloke who got nervy just refilling washer fluid! Now I've dismantled parts, replaced parts, etc.
The best way to protect yourself from being scammed or taken down the path is to educate yourself as you go along, and for safety, Clint Eastwood says it best: A man's gotta know his limits.

Larz,

Thanks and good for you. Many of us learned about cars before the computer age hit. It was an easy jump to the techno world as we knew the basics already. I agree with Clint and also add that knowledge is king, next to money. A suggestion: If you want to know about a specific car in detail buy a shop manual. My brother-in-law owns a weird one. It's a 1993 Ford Taurus SHO. When anything goes wrong with it, out comes the shop manual first thing. Not to say I have never taken my car to a mechanic, but I have a pretty decent knowledge of cars and a good idea when I start hearing BS.

My best to you and motor on my good friend.
