I can speak from experience...I have 18's and the normal everyday ride is rough. Knowing what I know now I would recommend 17's with a bigger tire, your ride will be nicer than with the 18's

Speak for yourself. When you get wheels THAT big, your tires don't even look like rubber bands anymore. They look like you just stretched a condom over a ridiculously large wheel.

17" would be the biggest I'd go. And even at that, the ride is a little harsh for my tastes. but they didn't make my wheel in a 16", so there you go.

I really enjoy seeing all the modifications people are doing to their cars, but I have a question. And it may be a silly question but does changing tire size affect the speedometer readout? I understand that it is posible to go to a larger wheel size without changing overall diameter of the tire, but it looks like the od is larger on some of the pics I'm seeing.

that is where proper plus sizing comes in.....you need to match th overall diameter as close as posible

There are useful tools to help with that, too:http://miatanet.com/garage/tirecalc.html

Nobody is considering what larger diameter tires do to acceleration and MPG. I have 18's with 40 series tires. Appearance is "awesome". Compared to a coworker's stock Versa, there is a noticable difference in overall diameter of the tires. Larger rubber is like changing your gears in the rear end (on an older Camaro, etc.). You SHOULD gain MPG, but lose some acceleration!!!! Now for the "badder" news. You DON'T gain on MPG either. Because the bigger tires "work" the engine a little harder at cruise speeds, the computer compensates with a richer mixture. One thing I will say...my Versa with the 40 series Kuhmos handles significantly better than my buddy's stock set-up. My buggy came from the dealer with the 18's. If I was doing it myself (with what I know now), I'd go for the 17's w/ 40 series. This will load the engine closer to design and leave you with a little more "wheel well" if you ever decide to drop in lowering springs.
