As a new 90Q owner need a little advice on rubber and rims. My plan is to keep the original rims for dedicated snows(easy call if you're living on the east coast today!!!!). Would like to step up to 16's. Been looking at the Firestone SZ50's, the Sumo HTRZ11's, and the Khumo 712's. Anyone have an opinion on my choices???!!! Jeff:thinker

nuQ:

I know nothing about the Sumo's except some folks like them. The Kumho's are decent and cheap and also ppoular, as they are stickeir than teh Firehawks but last not very long. Not a bad choice according to many accounts.

The firehawk SZ50EP's have recently developed quite a following here and even seem to satisfy Dennis; (aka Q45tech) exacting standards.

As for size most agree the largest size for tires (Q or otehrwise) are 17's if you dont wanna impose excessive penal;ties on your mpg and performance.16's are also very popular and many feel that size is the perfect choice.

(I run 17's usually)

I just put the Kumho 712's on my 91 Q in 245/50/16 WR (97 load rating @ 44psi) and on a Miata for winter tires. I have run these on other vehicles in the past and they are a good bargain with decent turn-in and breakaway; they have given me excellent wear so far. They are not a light tire by any means and have a very stiff sidewall. They tend to lose some of their "stickiness" after 50% treadwear though. I had 3 out of 4 tires that on the Q that would not balance out within specs on a Hunter 9700. The vendor was great about replacing them and now they are smooth as butter. They are noisier at lower speeds than the OEM Michelins but the increase in lateral stability has been excellent. Be very careful about those load ratings. Qtech was very helpful and advised using nothing less than a 95 per factory spec. Good advice! That load rating requirement will limit your options as many tires just aren't suitable for a 4000 pound vehicle capable of 155 mph. Good Luck

The 95V spec was for the best and most expensive tire Michelin made in the early 90's.

Assuming that another 95V tire in a different price range [under $120 each] is the same strength/capacity is not a good idea.

The problem is all tires are tested with zero camber in the lab and a Q has negative 0.7-1.5 degrees going straight this loads the inner edge by 20% higher than the tire expects on a non performance car.

I try to use 235/60/15 Michelin which have a 98H rating [the extra 120 pounds of rating [about 8% stronger] seems to help...............255/50/16 is eqivalent strength.

The 4000 pound static weigh is not the major problem it is the OVERLOAD of the front tire in turning and braking when the weight exceeds the tire specifications.

nuQ - Keep your eyes peeled on eBay for 16" alloy takeoffs - These can be had VERY cheaply, and are some of the strongest and best-made alloys out there. No fitment problems, and they'll accept a wider tire. I, like HighwayQ45, run a 245/50/16 tire and have been incredibly happy - The larger footprint and stiff sidewall really makes the Q a world-class contender.

I got some Yokohama AVS ES100s for the second generation Q wheels I bought. I'm very happy with them. They are quieter and seem stickier than Kumho 712s, which I have on my other car, and the cost is about the same. I got them from Americas (Discount everywhere but CA) Tire, and they were about $20 a tire cheaper than the house brand Yokohama YK420s. I recommend them highly.

Since I put the new wheels on, I have a complete set of 95 Q45 wheels for sale (the ones with many narrow spokes) in very good condition. They have some minor scratches and dings, but no big damage. $200 OBO + shipping. Pictures of them are available on request.

I have the SZ50EP tires in 225/60-15 on my 90 Q and their performance is exceptional. Outstanding handling and quiet.
