So, I went to check the tire pressure of my Rogue today. The valve caps (aftermarket steel ones) were on pretty tight, so I used a small socket wrench to loosen one of them up. Well, apparently the cap was on so tightly because the valve stem corroded and adhered to the cap. When I went to loosen with the wrench, the whole stem cracked, leaving me with a cap and part of a valve stem stuck inside. Needless to say, I had a nice flat tire. At least I was in my garage. Now usually when people have flat tires, it is assumed that the jack in the cargo area will suffice. However, just as I got the car to the right height, the jack gave out. I'm bringing the Rogue in for 10K service next week, but will also be mentioning the TPMS corrosion issues (because I don't want to pay for new valve stems...) and the faulty jack.

You may not have much recourse on getting your valve stem/TPMS sensor replaced under warranty. The warranty booklet is pretty explicit about using non-Nissan parts:

Quote »WHAT IS NOT COVEREDDAMAGE, FAILURES OR CORROSION DUE TOACCIDENTS, MISUSE OR ALTERATIONSThis warranty does not cover damage, failures or corrosionresulting from:■ Installation of non-Nissan approved accessories orcomponents.[/quote]See page 6 of your warranty booklet.

Fixing the valve stem may require replacing the entire TPMS sensor assembly. This won't be cheap as the sensors alone are over $100USD plus labor to install and reprogramming of the TPMS system.

Brought the Rogue in today. They fixed the broken valve stem for free and got the rest of the valve caps off. I'd suggest for others not to combine metal valve caps with the TPMS system...

Seems you have a very understanding dealer. Good for you!

I have added a post to the TPMS FAQ with some additional information:

FAQ - Tire Pressure Monitoring System

The valve stems on the TPMS system are made of aluminum. If you use brass, un-plated steel, etc valve caps, they can cause galvanic corrosion and will seize to the valve stem.

Plastic or nickel-plated valve caps are the only types recommended for use with TPMS sensors. Note: some of the fancy chrome valve caps are chrome plated brass on the outside while the threads will be brass. DO NOT use these types of valve caps with the TPMS sensor/valve stem.
