I wanted to see if anyone had any advice on the numerous tire options available for my 2001 QX4. I have a set of QX56 wheels to install here very soon after I get them bored.

I went to tire rack and found a whole bunch of tires. I need a good solid set for the winter in the above size, these tires will be primarily for winter driving in the the DC Metro area where we do get some snow but not a lot.

I would like a speed rating for up to about 90-100 mph's.

Here is the tire rack link @ http://www.tirerack.com/tires/...er=18

Depends on the look you want, but I am running the Nitto Terra Grappler in that size. For some reason Tire Rack doesn't carry Nitto. Discounttiredirect.com does or a local tire shop.

Sorry to thread jack but how do you like those? I was at an off-road expo on Saturday and learned from the Nitto people that they come with a 60,000 mile warranty. They're cheaper then the BFG A/T's which don't have any warranty.

EDIT: It was actually General Tire that offered the warranty, not Nitto. I don't think Nitto offers warranties.

I have Generals. I read the fine print on the warranty, and you have to adhere to strict maintenance schedules to keep the warranty valid. I forget the specifics, but I remember thinking it wouldn't even be worth the hassle.

I'm curious about the Nitto Terras A/Ts too. They look pretty sweet. How is the ride/noise comfort? Tread life?

These are the same design as the popular Toyo Open Country A/T (Toyo owns Nitto), an extremely good All Terrain that actually works well throughout the entire tire life...unlike many BFG designs that start out nice and taper off in wet/snow traction as the tread wears. Toyo refuses to sell to "National" chains so the competition isn't so high and they can maintain their good profit margins. It's working and demand is staying high since they are voted #1 for 7+ years, now in product quality.

I love the Terra Grappler. I don't notice any noise at all really. They have been on since March and there is not much wear at all and I have put over 10,000 miles on them. I have always been a fan of Nitto I think they have the best thread designs between the Mud, Dune, and Terra Grappler. I was gone go with the Toyo as a winter tire for the stock rim but they didn't look as aggresive as the Nitto. After looking at them again they have almost an identical thread design, the sidewall is just diffrent. I decided to go with a 245/75/16 Kumho Road Venture M/T instead. I know its a drasctic diffrent but I want something as good looking as the Nitto.

Like the Nitto. Have some on our M30. I am a Toyo guy after MUCH trial and error. They used to make a 100,000 mile radial, Touring 800, which I have had on an MBZ for seven years. They have about 60k on them and you would NOT know buy looking or riding. The ride is still sweet and the girlfriend says wants some on M30 when nitto's done, but as I said pretty sure they don't make them anymore. I value her preference as M30 is her daily. My QX has new Bstones on as I bought it with them. Not crazy about them as they seem loud as well as overly hard when cold and inconsistently soft at times. Now my tires are ran in the Desert Southwest and 100+ degree temps are the norm so a 40k tire is good for 25k+ if your lucky. I have found this to be the case time after time with Dunlops, BF's, and the rest.. Some friends like the Falkans but know not long term tire here but like price. Have heard good from MANY General guy's too.

Have tried them all as I am tire anal and I would not be unhappy with more Nitto's, but go Toyo when I can. The big 10-12 ply Toyo is unbelievable on heavy trucks and such. Got a friend to buy some and he is still blown away.

My 2 cents.

Thanks
