Some people here like a particular Yokohama tire that is not directional, but the tread pattern is not symmetrical, so one side always has to be to the outside of the vehicle. Those tires can't be dismounted/remounted on the wheel facing the other way.
I prefer the rearward cross, regardless of FWD/RWD/AWD, for two reasons. It allows every tire to spend an equal amount of time at all four wheel positions, and the tires always maintain the same direction of rotation as they get moved from rear to front. When moving from front to rear, it's not important.
