One of my tires gave out as I was driving home the other day. Parts of the sidewall were shredded, but its still attached to the wheel. I want to salvage the wheel, but I can't get the tire off. I tried prying it with a couple of screwdrivers and other tools. Every time I move it, the rubber flakes off all over the place. Is there a quick and easy way to do this myself?

No sadly there is no reasonable method for a regular person to change a tire by himself. My advice woule be just take it to a tire shop and have them dismount the tire.

I've seen my friend TRIES to do it

it is almost like a tiny ant trying to pry a streched rubber band off of a pen... not very likely without some crazy tools

The tools we use for road service(I've spent years having to do this, ugh) aren't that extraordinary, it's just too hard to explain how to do it without showing you.We still do a lot of tires by hand...bicycle, wheelchair, go cart, golf cart, mower, small tractor, etc... and the largest tires are also done with hand tools... semi trucks, backhoes..

Best advice is always, take it to a shop

I work for discount tire and don't think it is possible by hand to take tires off. The machines we use press the bead of the tire off the inside lip. Take it to any tire shop and have someone do it.

We have to use tire spoons and bars when we do the 26's and 28's. Now THAT'S good times.

(Take it to a shop because there is a technique you need to understand and practice to mount and strip tires.)

I worked at a tire shop also and i'd also recommend trying to do it without the proper tools. It's just too easy/cheap to have them do it and they can take care of the disposal right there.

out of curiosity, how does this work?

i got a tire halfway on the rim by myself using a broom handle, but i couldnt get the other bead on there. also i got a tire off a rim using a dremel. Ive wanted to try using a skill saw but never got around to it. hacksaw dosent work, rubber pushes into the blade, makes it too slow. thats all my experience in the matter.

^^that's terrible. Use a chisel and hammer to unseat the bead wire wrap! No don't!

It's so easy for a shop to do. Find one who will work with you, chances are a guy at the shop will take interest in your ultra cool drifter wheels and help you and give you deals.

lol i never said taking a dremel to a tire was a good idea, but given the circumstances at the time, it had to be done. hahaha

That's been done at our shop too, super streched and super worn St-115 Azenis just refused to come off this NSX's 19" Mayas with a dropcenter like in the middle of a 10" wide wheel. =\
