I'm in the market to change the tires on my J30t. Currently I have all-season Goodyear Eagles. They have served me well over the years in dry, wet and snow conditions. I'm looking at another set of all-season tires that MUST perform especially well in snow and rain (I live up in Canada). Anybody have any experience (or know anything about) Michelin Pilots, the new Michelin Hydroedge, Goodyear Ultra Grips or the new Goodyear Eagle RSA??? I look forward to some input/recommendations-Thanks!

I just put on a new set of Goodyear Eagle HP. They are H-speed rated, all-season radial. I live in Florida, but can't speak for handling in snow. Otherwise, I am very pleased. May want to go on-line and check out the Michelin and Goodyear sites. That is where I got the information to help me make a decision. Good luck.

I have Goodyear Eagle RS-As on my J30 and they are great soo far. I live in Chicago and it has been raining alot lately and the RSAs have been doing just fine. Mine are a lil bigger than the stock tires though, I have 225/50R17s with 17x7.5 up front and 235/50R17s with 17x8s in the back. Plus, my J puts 190 whp to them and you almost have to try to spin them in the rain, so they do alright. I reccomend them. My previous tires were Bridgestone Potenza RE950s sized 205/60 15 (forgot the speed rating) on the stock wheels and I like the RSAs better, the Potenzas tended to jerk when I would start to spin the wheels where the RSAs I have now are more smooth. But, the Potenzas were alot cheaper, and are not bad tires themselves.

Tell you what, I had fairly new Goodyear Eagle HPs on my J when I bought the car. I thought they were fine except that they seemed to slip on concrete in the rain, were useless in snow and develpoed some strange rubbing sounds. When it came time to replace them I bought Yokohama YK420s.

I couldn't believe the difference! The Yokos are superior in every regard. Better ride, better handling, less noise and superior rain and snow traction. The Eagles are POS IMHO and I would never go back to them. The YK 420s have a max inflation of 35 psi while the Eagles had a substantially higher recommended pressure. The J is a heavy car so strong sidewalls are a must. Some of the Q owners have reported problems running the 420s but that is a yet again heavier than the J and should run V rated tires. The Q also has a different suspension set up than the J so that could have created problems with the 420s as well.

Forget the Eagles. If you get the 420s, you will like them. There may be better tires out there but that is the limit of my experience with H rated tires.

I should mention that we're talking all season tires here. A set up with dedicated summer tires and true snow tires would, of course, be optimum.

so what type of snow tires would you recommend? I just changed the front tires (all-season tires from pepboys). and I may get snow tires just for the rear ones. I live in MA and I already had very exciting experiences with snow.

The experiences will be even more exciting with Pep Boys thrown in the mix! Why not go for slicks on the rear to raise the excitement up a notch?

Expertie, there have been many idepth discussions about tires on this site. You should do a search to begin your crash course (pardon the pun) on tire construction, specifications and manufacturers.

Are your tires properly speed rated for your J? Proper load range rating? Sidewall strength? Directional Vs non-directional? Temperature range?

Tires are the single most important safety factor on any car.
