I just put on a new set of 245/45/18 Michelin Pilot Sport A/S tires. I replaced the OEM tires on my 06 M35x. I had all the same complainants about wondering and poor grip all the way around. I am blown away at how good my new tires are. Wet or dry these things have great grip. I just drove in 3 inches of snow today. Stopping and starting was very good, better than my 4WD 07 4-Runner. I live in Indiana so I drove to Tire Rack and had the tires installed, they only charge $15 a wheel. My installed cost was only $640. My buddy told me be about these so I purchased some. Now he is pissed because he paid $250 plus $25 install or $1100 three weeks ago. Copy this link

Hey!

Ha, can't believe I saw this post just now. I just got done ordering a set of these from tire rack for my 06 m35x. Hope they do well. I'm in KC and the snow and ice is terrible. I currently I have summer only tires on there and thought they would be ok since I have the x.... I was wrong! So, I will get these install in the coming weeks in hopes of better snow/slush performance... hopefully in the steering category.

Anyway, great deal on these tires. Glad you found the deal!

Doug, like I said I have been driving in 3 inches of snow last nigh and all day today. I have only slid one time and that was when I wanted to see how much grip I had. I also have a 4WD SUV and went to the store in it today. I parked it when I got home, the M35X was better in the snow for sure. Now that the slush is starting to come the grip is still very very good. You will love these tires. Well at least I do.

Hi guys. Quick question: would 255/45/18s be a problem on the M35x? A friend of mine just bought an '07 with brand new Michelin Pilots on it, but I noticed the size difference.

Thanks!

Just a few comments for everybody:

1. The Michelin Pilot Sport A/S has been replaced by a new model: The Pilot Sport A/S Plus. Hence the reason for the sale, I suspect. A very good price indeed!

2. I have them on my M45 right now (put them on in April). I would rank them as definitely below the capabilities of the summer tires I had on my car. I am also a bit disappointed in how quick they are wearing - below the half-way point in 10k miles, which is worse than my sticky summer tires! This is something I plan to have Michelin look at ... soon.

3. The Pilot Sport A/S are good tires in summer, but not as outstanding as Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3, or my previous favorite (no longer made) the Firestone Firehawk SZ50EP. Both those tires handled better, were quieter and had outstanding wet weather grip.

4. Note that summer tires should never be used in cold weather, let alone slush or snow. They will turn as hard as a rock and you will slide easily. The Pilot Sport A/S will get you through very light snow.

5. Good as the Pilot Sport A/S is, it is still a compromise ... from the perspective of the phrase "All-Season" - they are simply not as good as summer tires in summer and not as good as true snow tires in winter. So, yes, use them in very light snow that gets cleared quickly or the temperatures stay above freezing most of the time ... but not in weather where the snow sticks around for a while or the snow could get heavy unexpectedly.

6. Point being that, in our high-powered RWD cars, you will always do better by getting summer tires for warm weather, and cheap wheels and good snow tires for winter! My experience living in New Hampshire with RWD sports cars clearly demonstrated this to me.

Enjoy!

Wow great. It sounds like then that we have two sets of tires that correct the tramlining of the OEM Goodyear RSA's; the ContiExtremeContacts (very good in winter) and these Michelin Pilot Sport A/S.

Hey Doug:

I'm a relatively close neighbor just to the south of you in OP (Stilwell actually). Let me know how those new Pilots work out. I have on 06 M35x as well with the original RSA's and just under 25K. They are just about shot and I was looking into the Michilen Primacy MXV4 at Costco but they run about $225 each. OUCH!

Nice to see some KC boys here. I'm in the olathe area. I do not have the all wheel drive on my 06 M35, and the slightest bit of snow is AWFUL!!! I am running summer tires though, i figure that there are way more nice days than crappy ones to warrant having A/S tires, and i like to drive this car the way it should be.

The Michelin Pilot Sport A/S is likely to be a much better tire (handling in dry and in light snow) than the Michelin Pilot Primacy MXV4. But, it may not wear as long and not be as quiet.

You may be underwhelmed by the performance of the Primacy ...

Likewise!

FWIW, the AWD doesn't do all that well in the snow with my old RSA's either. It is fun to get on the gas around the corners with (predominately) RWD. After 18 yrs of boring FWD cars, it's a nice change.

Thanks for the insight. I can live with a little less performance for a quieter ride and 60k miles between tires changes.

And that is perfectly fine. the Primacy will definitely be better than the RSA ... those are mediocre tires (albeit long-lasting) and dangerous in wet weather, IMHO.

I don't think you will get 60k miles out of the Primacy - the car is heavy and the tread wear could not possibly be that good. Closer to 40k max on those tires might be a reasonable expectation, and you still may be surprised by lower numbers - I know I am on the Pilot Sport A/S (I was expecting more than I think I will end up with ... possibly worse than my summer Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3's).

How many miles do you have on them right now? What were your expectations?

Just over 10k miles on them and they are down to 4/32 (more than half the tread is now gone). I was expecting to get 25k to 30k out of them, given that I can get nearly 20k out of a set of stickier Goodyear Eagle's ...

The Pilot Sport A/S has a 400 UTQG, and while you cannot compare to another mftr, their own Pilot Sport PS2 wears about 20k and has a lower UTQG. So, the Sport A/S should have gone more than 20k, IMHO.

I guess it depends on what you consider long lasting. My RSA's have just under 25K and are pertty much done - about 2/32's left.

The Michelens (MXV4, I think) I ran on my last two cars (Honda's) got 60K easliy. Does the weight of the M make that much of a difference? I don't drive with too much right foot, except now and then.

On my wife's Acura CL (a lighter car), Goodyear RSA tires lasted 5 years and almost 40k miles and were only down to about 4/32" tread depth. I changed them because of the age of the tires and because they were starting to show micro-cracks inside the rubber - way too old to be safe!

On the same car, the Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3 last about 23 to 25k miles (down to 3/32" tread depth), as I recall. This tire goes to about 20k on my M45 (albeit a different size tire, etc.)

So, my guess is that the weight of the car has some nominal effect on wear. But, not as much as the brand and model, etc.

But can you live with the decreased braking and roadholding performance? Especially in the wet?

Stopping even just 5 feet shorter is priceless if it keeps you out of someone's trunk.

Any thing over a 400 rating UTQG might cause the TCS to engage more frequently. Owners have to ensure they meet minimum OEM specifications when they replace components. On tires, these include speed, traction, UTQG and load range ratings besides size.
