This past week I notice that my aligment was off, the Q is drifting to the right. Then I give my baby a nice bath today and notice some uneven tire wear. After I washed the Q I went to the local tire dealer(Martin tire)and got a quote $800+tax.Now I have Yoko tires with a V speed rating ,thats good to 149mph.My back tires are still good but fronts are a lil jacked up.Now my current tire are yoko 420 but they are discontiued with a newer tire.At the moment I don't have $900 for a new set.I was wondering if I did lower the speed rating and got 4 brand new tires would it affect performance much and do you think the cars weight has a big to do with tires?Or should I just get my front 2 done and keep the V speed rating? Is the V rating stock with the Q?I searched the Nico archives and didn't find a answer even though there prolly is one.Looking through all the threads was giving me a headachePlus I figured to post this here since it is the Q forum and more ppl will see it.Thx

The Q eats tires (even more than kittens). I would personally stick with a V rated tire. I doubt there were V rated tires in the early 1990's in 215/65/15 anyway.

Get the most expensive tires you can afford, even if you have to buy 2 at a time.

Yokohama 420 is a made for Discount tires special.

Use on a G50 has been problematic, at best. One member had a blowout at the front and did serious damage at highway speeds. Lots of infromation in the sticky and previous posts.

Do what Jeff says. Only Yokohama capable of being on the G50 is AVS dB S2.

You have a 98 Q w/ 16" tires, correct?

My suggestion would be to buy the 2 best/most expensive tires you can afford, along with moving the current rear to the front and having a 4 wheel alingment done.

As Jeff says, the Q likes tires, dang it likes all things petrol based .

"I doubt there were V rated tires in the early 1990's in 215/65/15 anyway."

1990 OEM Q tire was MICHELIN XGTV.............. V rated special made just for Q........following the tire placard 35 psi cold it was quite safe on high speed test [155 + mph] even in summer Arizona test track heat.Comparable to A008 or RE71 in that time frame!

XGTV was the OEM tire for MB 500E!

The tires were great they wore out fast [less than 15k] so the were never unsafe internally at any speed the Q was capable of sustaining.

PREMIUM OEM back then always used fast wearing tires to limit their liability. They know that tires only start to fail at 2 years or 20,000 miles as they still do today.

Even the 1990 LS400 had V rated tiresEven the detuned 1994 Q came with V rated tires since their were no top speed limiters within the realm of Q vs wind drag.

Because of the design changes [going to ballon thin sidewalls] a W rated might be the closes to what a V rated was in the early 90's and still lacking in sidewall strength.............why you always use a stronger load rating [stronger than 1521 pounds] to try to buy a little extra as the tire ages!

95 load .....does that mean 95mph?I'm a tire dummy....I wanna be able to do 110-120 with no concern of the tiresI take my Q above a buck almost everydayIn this part of TX theres a bunch of open land that I travel through at those speeds

Go to Tire Rack (there is a link on the right side of this screen). They have a wealth of tire information.

95, 93, 94, 98, etc load rating is a max weight capacity for the tire. Each tire mfg has a little different load rating (these are not regulated well, so a 95 on a Michelin can be dirrerent than a 95 on a Kumho). The speed rating, V, W, H, R, S, etc lets you know how fast the tire is rated for. This is regulated, so each tire that is V rated will be safe to drive at a certain speed. Tire Rack explains all this.

There is a good tire review section on there as well.

Good Luck!

Hang on a minute. Did you say that you tires cost $900 a set? A set = 4? That's $225 a piece!

Why not go for some Eagle F1s for less money?
