I have a '92 hatchback, and am looking for ways to quiet the incessant rattling my subwoofers cause. One main problem area I've identified is the rear seatbelt assemblies. The boxes hanging just over the rear 4x6 speakers. They have ballbearings or something in them to facilitate the retracting of the seatbelts, but they make an awful lot of noise with subs. Do you know if it's something I can quiet while keeping rear seatbelt functionality? I was just wondering if anybody else had tried.

Another place I've noticed is the hatch itself. It vibrates visibly from the outside, while fully closed and locked. Is this inherent, or is it just my hatch? The reason I ask is because my hatch has been through quite a bit. I recently removed the spoiler, and am still in the process of patching the rust-holes before I repaint it. Aside from that, the left side of the hatch rides a little lower than the right side. Lower than it should. When it's closed, the top of the hatch falls a little low and doesn't match up with the rest of the body, creating an unsightly quarter-inch misalignment.

I don't want to spend tons of time and money ripping the interior apart and dynamatting everything, so if anybody has any bright ideas or experiences they'd like to share, I'm all ears. Thanks. =)

I've got two rockford-fosgate punch xlc (I know, they're old but I love them) 12"s in a sealed box firing up with 800 watts going to them in my hatch and it makes my decklid rattle pretty bad but other then that nothing else rattles. I have noticed that it makes my hatch fluctuate though. My spoiler vibrates almost 1/2 an inch if it's a pretty good bass note.

I listened to the seat belts and didn't hear anything. Maybe your backseats were used alot before you had it and the berrings are worn? I can't fathom why the backseats would be used enough to cause wear but hey ya never know.

sorry can't offer help but I'm having a similiar probelm. From the outside my car is rattling big time! Sounds like its coming from inbetween the gas tank and chassis, anyone know of a good way to eliminate the problem, or what I can use to muffle the sound?

thanks

Thanks for the reply Sygerwulf. I know what you mean, I'm not even sure why the damn car has a backseat. ;) But nevertheless they do rattle. I'll try to figure out what it is.

I have two 10" JL Audio 10W3's, sealed box. Sending 150 watts to each of them (Phoenix Gold Tantrum 300.2 amp). They are some killer subs, even with barely over 2/3 power. They put my friend's 12" to shame (not sure what brand though).

For insurance purposes :) If the car was a 2 seater it would instantly be considered a sports car and insurance would skyrocket.

I use to have a pair of JL12W0 and they were great. My brother bought a pair of Rockford-Fosgate Power HX2's and didn't want the JL's anymore so he gave them to me :D I woulda kept them but I found this moron down here that paid me $300 for the pair, which I absolutely could not turn down. The rockfords I have now do just fine though, I've had them for about 2 1/2 years now and they still pound.

Oh you're right, I didn't think of the insurance. =) I've had 4 people in the car before though, so it DOES work. I hate having someone behind me though (I'm about 6'2"), so I try to limit to 2 passengers. ;)

Mine I bought new, the 10W3's are about $200 a piece, but I got the last display models so they were about $120 each. =) Same deal with the amp, got about $50 off that I think.

I have 2 12" kicker comp VRs in a sealed box, and the subs are wired into one transmitter. So my kicker KX800.2 amp is bridged, it puts out 951 watts, but i'm only using like 700 watts at the most. I do get a lot of excessive rattling from my sunroof and from my hatch, i think my trunk lock is starting to rattle loose too. oh yeah its a 91 s13.

Hey guys.....I had the same problems.....

1) Move the actual lock down as far as it will go by lostening the screws....and taping it down with a small hammer, then re tighten.

2) wrap the U shaped hook on the hatch itself with some black electrical tape....this helps a bunch

3) As for the hatch sinking further then the body...make sure you have the stock cusions on the hatch...they look like black wine corks, and rest between the hatch and the body right next to the hatch seal.....if your missing that, you may also get some rattleing.

4) Seatbelt internals ratteling.....pry back the body pannel there and spray Lithium grease on the ball berrings. Also make sure the actuall hanging box is not vibrating on the body or plastic.

Wow, thanks Mark. I checked the lock, it was already down as far as it would go. Good idea though.

Both hatch foam stoppers are there, not worn down or anything. When the hatch is closed, like I said the left side is a little lower than it should be. If I left up the left side, back to the level it should be at (it moves a little bit), I can actually look in the space between the hatch and the car and see that the stopper is about a quarter of an inch away from where it's supposed to touch. I can't imagine why that is. Not a big problem though.

I haven't opened up the seatbelt enclosures yet, but that's the next step. I'll let you know how it goes.

Thanks again! =)

Bad news...that sounds like one of two things....

1) Car was in an accedent and fixed.

or

2) the hatch is twisted in some way..was it ever replaced?

I have yet to figure out how to open the seatbelt enclosures, but the electrical taping was a massive improvement. I also taped the hings of the rear deck (they're broken so they rattle freely).

As for the hatch...I don't think it's ever been in an accident. Like I said, I'm ghetto patching the rust holes where the spoiler was. They look like 10 year old rust holes too, so. But it must be twisted some way, like you said. I don't know, it's a mystery. =)

Thanks again.

Its pretty tough to push soo many watts in your trunk or hatch without have a little rattle. In any car. For me my only rattle comes from the hatch's trunk cover. I had to disconect the shoestrings and it and rest it on my box in order to fit. This is all to hide my musical equiptment because i don't have the baby tinted. Not sure if i want to 'limo' my car because its ssooo clean I think I'd be ghetto-ing it out. Its white by the way. And i like sleepa's. my future license plate will be ZzZ zZz. peace out-side.

If you want to get rid of the buzzing, remove the Honda emblem. :D
