I own a 2004 M45 with just 30K miles on it. I bought it new in 2004 so no way is the 30K wrong. It is pristine and I maintain it like the nut I am. Every little issue gets fixed ASAP.

Here is my problem I hope someone has had and can help me out. On start up and idle I hear a small, not loud, mid-pitch whine. At any speed I cannot hear it. This is really bugging me as it just started and was never there before. What I do know is its not the heater AC blower. Turning the steering wheel does not change it. I have heard all forms of alternator whines and I am pretty sure it is not that. I have heard over the 40+ years I have owned and worked on cars water pumps, cam shafts, piston knocks, main bearings going and many others. I am quility of not trying to ID location yet. I hear this whine while in the drivers seat. What gets me is I have never heard this type of whine before. Has any 2003-2004 M45 owners had anything similiar? If so what was it? Thanks for any help, advice you can give. I will post the general location once I get time to ID it. I admit I am a fanatic about keeping this car in perfect condition so I was hoping for a quick hit or suggestion as to what this weird whine could be. Thanks!!!

In a previous life I had a similar whine that came from my gearbox. Turns out it was the synchro gears.
Seeing it's an automatic you don't have that but I have heard slight whines coming from things like transmissions bad or plugged valvebody, fuel pumps on their way out, ps pumps bad bearings, even the HVAC systems mode doors.

Svard,

Thanks. I know what you mean about the whines. I have to ID location better. I have heard whines out of some cars and big farm equipment that is normal. I always have the alternative to let it whine until it gets so bad or breaks to determine what it is. I just may do the later even though it bugs me.
